Lane splitting thoughts

We could start a new poll:

How many times have you run from police, and how many times were you successful? For me, one run, one successful!
If you mean actually getting chased for miles by the police
Mine would be twice getting away and once getting caught
Although when I got caught I had actually got away but the police sussed where I was staying on a campsite
I'd quickly kicked the stand down and parked my bike behind my tent
They came flying in through gate and did a 180 on the wet grass
Two got out with torches and found my bike immediately
I was by this time standing with a group of mates and the police demanded to know whose bike it was so I stuck my hands up
I had a right good bollickig but they didn't charge me
I think it was a bit of PR because there was around 20 of us and we had been "jovial" for most of the weekend
We all calmed down a bit after that

As I have stated earlier lane splitting is allowed in my State but and that's a big but must not be over 30 KMPH any higher than that if caught big fines, I have seen cops waiting on the side of the road in congestive peak hour traffic and checking to see if MC riders are doing the right thing and under the 30kmph limit, there are a lot that don't play by the rules and at traffic lights bike are allowed to filter to the front.
This law was allowed after a lot of consideration from safety experts and transport dept. and officials as well bike groups, it just wasn't cocked up took years and years of consulting and has worked very well.
Doing high speed lane splitting is just insane and that's why accidents happen, so with the 17% in the case above if true facts, what speeds was the accident victim's doing while lane splitting, I bet not too many where under 30kmph.

I've never known if there's a speed limit for filtering in the UK? Someone will correct me
Quite often on motorways or dual carriageways when I'm filtering I'll get another rider up behind me that wants to go faster , very often with hazard lights on etc
I'll move over and let them pass and then tuck in behind them unless they go too fast
But I have seen people doing insane speeds between slower moving vehicles and no matter how quick your reactions are when a car changes lanes there's no room to manoeuvre
Always ride within your limits if you can, especially in traffic

I once seen a semi trailer tyre explode while riding in front of me and the wife if you were beside it when it blew and in between another car or truck the bike rider would be dead, just from the shockwave alone but when they do go off rubber and steel belts fly everywhere, we weren't far behind the trailer and could see the shockwave and the mess it created, lucky we were at a safe distant but the cars that where beside and near it were swerving every which way as it was on a 3 lane highway, we were just starting on a 800km trip and after seeing that it took us some time before I over took trucks, well a little while anyway.

Been there, done that.

If you smell rubber, get the phuck away from all trucks

I've been squashed between cars in heavy stop-and-go traffic, only in a car thankfully. I don't want that happening on a bike. On CA freeways I split, but much less than I used to in my glorious days of youth. I have two fingers on the brake and keep it to 30MPH max or so. No problems in over 40 years. I see riders flying 30MPH faster than traffic and think well, there goes a statistic. Coming up to a light or stop it is a judgment call, and I do it a lot less in that situation too. Some riders jockey to the front then take off at the green. I stay 1 or two cars back, in a gap. Let the car take the red light runner. Moderation is my mantra. I plan on living forever. So far, so good.

This guy has riding skills, but I'm sure he will be a statistic as some point. Lane splitting at 180mph can't work out for him forever:

If your that desperate to avoid "being late" you need to get a different job, or a different life, or a different something. Nobody has to get anywhere on time that badly.

Or just get up earlier ?!

Very appropriate for the old saying:

“Better late than never” ….

The problem is how much earlier do you get up?
I leave at 6am to get to work
That's 37 miles of the M25 including the crossing
It takes between 45mins and worst was over 3hrs to get to work so I'd have to leave at 3am to get to work for 7.00 am
I think it's too much of a generalisation to simply leave earlier or change jobs

Suppose you are simply going out for a ride and the traffic where you live is really bad
So you filter for a few miles until you get to some decent roads?
Or sit it traffic for hours?
Give up riding?
I think there are a lot of dynamics to this conversation tbh

I suspect that being late ( if true ) had very little to do with this guy’s manic riding - he has posted other videos that are just as frightening . As others have noted he will likely get caught out at some point - let’s hope that he doesn’t take any innocents with him .

While I am not wishing for this I am curious - I wonder if he could be prosecuted based on the video if the authorities pursued that path .
