Higher bars or rear sets?

When I made a transcontinental ride on my Atlas, I fitted 10 inch riser bars, and fitted leather strips in the handlebar clamps. The clamps were left loose enough that I could push or pull the bars into a new position while on the move. Thus, I could effect position changes to give my arms, back, and legs some relief.

Higher bars or rear sets?

I wouldn’t do that out of choice, but, I had an A10 many years ago with apehangers fitted that moved despite being tightened as best I could. From easy rider to ace bars at the touch of front brake

I am addressing the same issue with my MKIII Interstate. I was fortunate to find a set of Hyde rearsets, which are more “set backs” than rearsets, and I also purchase the following handlebar from feked.com which has a 7 inch rake back from center. No idea how this will all work out, but hoping for a bit more comfort on long runs than I currently get from my ‘74 Roadster with the Semi-Western and stock footrests. Fingers crossed.

I run with similar bars to the OP but a bit wider, and Hyde rearsets. The Hyde’s sit several inches farther forward than the Mick Hemmings PR ones I’ve used in the past. The main problem with the Hyde units is the orientation of the kick starter. I heavily modified mine to set the kicker upright where it belongs. There’s a pic of it on here somewhere.

I much prefer the riding position of euro bars and using the passenger pegs when there is no traffic but found as I have gotten older the strain on my wrists and shoulders started getting more uncomfortable. This year I went to western bars and although they are a bit more comfortable I just don't like the way they make the bike feel. I much prefer a sportier stance. Even with the higher bars I still need to use the rear footrests for comfort. I have tried rear sets but found that they lock me into 1 position so that I am no longer able to move around and vary my seating position. This year I will have to choose between comfort or riding experience.
