Greta Thunberg and the climate

The ice has receded to such a degree in North Canada that leisure craft sailboats can actually sail from east to west through the fabled NorthWest Passage , during last few Summer seasons , that is a fact , we also know what happened to several boat loads of explorers that tried that same route several decades earlier .... this is Historical fact and it does not make one think that the northern ice is growing larger each year ..... prolly the exact opposite

With a lot of the ice gone on the NW Passage one or two of the old missing boats might turn up. . . .

We know the climate is changing. Getting warmer. We also know man cannot survive a large climate change. We do not know how much human activity is causal, but we damn sure know burning hydrocarbons ain’t helping our plight.

I'm not following your train of thought here...
Are you trying to blame a bunch of school kids for trashing the planet with plastics?

Plastics were invented in the early 20th century. When you were a youngster (whenever that was) your parents didn't have access to cheap plastic stuff, as you have illustrated...

So at some point between your parents generation and the young generation now, plastic use and production EXPLODED. Perhaps you might take a look in the recycled mirror yourself.
Yes plastic was invented in the early 20 century but the only plastic then that I know of is Bakelite which was used for telephone, television and radios and are now collectors items.
The plastic explosion came around the 1960s until then you could still get your Coke and Pespi drinks in glass bottles etc.
I claim no part in its invention or its world wide use - I was caught up like everybody else, just like the school children of today are.

Without a rehearsed script, she's just another kid off the street...

Really, it was a VERY simple question.

How strange that, at the same time, the polar ice cap has expanded to the largest coverage ever...
Whatever the satellite image was produced , (which is 2 years old, by the way) a wracking 100 ft tall lump of ice, of which seven eighths is below water line, dissolving into the sea is not the same of some mass of surface ice shown up by a satellite hundreds of miles above earth. Anyone who believes that must also believe some Russian and Chinese ice making ship has been deployed in the Antarctica !!!

This is part of the testimony of Dr David Deming during a Senate Hearing in 2006.

“Mr. Chairman, members of the Committee, and distinguished guests, thank you for inviting me to testify today. I am a geologist and geophysicist. I have a bachelor's degree in geology from Indiana University, and a Ph.D in geophysics from the University of Utah. My field of specialization in geophysics is temperature and heat flow. In recent years, I have turned my studies to the history and philosophy of science. In 1995, I published a short paper in the academic journal Science. In that study, I reviewed how borehole temperature data recorded a warming of about one degree Celsius in North America over the last 100 to 150 years. The week the article appeared, I was contacted by a reporter for National Public Radio. He offered to interview me, but only if I would state that the warming was due to human activity. When I refused to do so, he hung up on me. I had another interesting experience around the time my paper in Science (1995) was published. I received an astonishing email from a major researcher in the area of climate change. He said we have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period."

Three years later in 1998, Michael Mann invented the Hokey [sic] Stick graph which erased the Little Ice Age, and then a subsequent graph in 1999 that erased the Medieval Warm Period. The previous warm periods have always been a problem for the Climate Jihadists, because they always want to be able to say "the warmest Ever." Fact: The Holocene in which we exist has been on a declining temperature trend for about the last 8000 years, and there have been several warm periods all of which were warmer than the current warm period. So, when history doesn't match your agenda, you simply change history.

Your last thread of Dr D Deming shows that there is a lot of "chaotic theory" when it comes to the earths temperature, but it has always been like that, we have had ice ages, a thaw another mini ice age and so on. Over the last 8000years it has not quite been as warm as it is now.
What you cannot get away from is what is happening here and now.
Scientists have published the first assessment quantifying the role of climate change in the recent Australian bushfires.
Global warming boosted the risk of the hot dry weather that's likely to cause bushfires by at least 30%.
But the study suggests the figure is likely to be much greater.
I will post item when I find it.

Ad hominem (Latin for "to the person"), short for argumentum ad hominem, typically refers to a fallacious argumentative strategy whereby genuine discussion of the topic at hand is avoided by instead attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

Politicians are really good at this.

Perhaps Grandpaul has Norton chops. But in MY opinion his social/political/scientific chops leave much to be desired and explains why Texas should still be a sovereign nation. GO OIL!
This is analogous to the Vietnam War in which 78,000 American GIs lost their lives. 20 years later the, then, Secretary of Defense, Robert MacNamera stated that the US policy (the war) was a mistake. We lost that war! Today Vietnam is a unified vibrant nation and economy.

A few years ago, when Rick Perry was governor of Texas he advocated seceding from the Union. Pablum for the right wing faithful. At this time there was a huge explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant. Before the fire trucks arrived Perry was on the phone to Obama, begging for help. Unlike our current president who likes to punish governors and states who do not support him, Obama graciously offered help to the disaster stricken region of Texas.

Not only has Texas given us Lee Harvey Oswald and George W. Bush, Louie Gohmert continues as a US representative from the 1st district of Texas. Gohmert never misses an opportunity to display how stupid he is. He is real indictment of the voters of that district

Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt.

Currently certain sectors of society are telling others to change their ‘dirty habits’ with a lot of focus on dirty cars and motorcycles etc. Saying the inconvenience is justified.

I can’t help but wonder how the conversations will go when the fingers start saying the internet should be shut down...

Yes, I saw that this morning as well :-)

And let's not forget that other favourite, Bitcoin.

Bitcoin's energy consumption 'equals that of Switzerland'

Its from July last year and as the algorithm gets harder to solve the energy needed increases.

No surprises there, I just can't stop this junk coming into my e mail box no matter how many times I attempt to block it - what a waste of energy.

Had this conversation back in the 20th Century with some Yuppies who were outraged by my dirty smokey ES2 but could not get their head round aircraft caused pollution... "But the sky is blue " they said passing through SE London after yet another global flying freebie

Figures... There used to be a powerstation with cooling towers just off the M1 in Sheffield dedicated to giving passing motorcycles an interesting time and feeding the Electric arc furnaces back inthe day when Sheffield still made steel in bulk. Long since gone ,but apparantly the servers for the city in London now consume more electricity than bulk steel manufacture used to do. Doubt there are any plans to shut them down .

Can I ask, what Medieval Warm Period ????

The River Thames froze over several times in the 16th and 17th century: is this Medieval enough?

During the Great Frost of 1683–84, the severest frost recorded in England, the Thames was completely frozen for two months,

Of the 24times the Thames was frozen over, the numbers in each century were: 15th two, 16th five, 17th ten, 18th six, 19th one.

It wasn’t warm, it was bloody freezing that a polar bear would have been right at home!

From a quick look at wikipedia:
The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) also known as the Medieval Climate Optimum, or Medieval Climatic Anomaly was a time of warm climate in the North Atlantic region lasting from c. 950 to c. 1250.

Bernhard, you're slight off in your dating of the Medieval period :)

Again, lifted direct from the net:
In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
