Exhaust Thread Repair Australia

Back in 1975 the factory recommended a guy in Croydon to fit a pair of helicoils. My father drove me up there and we spent an hour in the pub while he carried out the repair. They've been it there aver since. The guy used to appear in "Motorcycle Mechanics" magazine tuning various bikes, his trade mark was always wearing Jesus sandals.

I installed a pair of al/bronze inserts in a head some time back for a guy who purchased the bike new.

He said it had never had any work done on the threads before and visually they looked original.

After I installed a pair of inserts and returned it I got a call saying one of my inserts was coming out.

When I got the head back it was obvious that there had been an aluminum insert welded in before and the weld had been machined off perfectly so you could not tell it had been done. After installing the al/bronze insert the weld had given way and the aluminum insert was pulled out about 1/8th inch with my smaller insert in the middle of it. I repaired it by removing the aluminum insert and installing an oversized al/bronze insert.

The owner swore he had never had a repair done so either he forgot, or the repair was done before the bike was sold.
