Down the road

Think on the bright side Fullauto, you are able to feel the pain, and the insurance company that your not insured with can't say no to repairing your bike.
And the money you didn't pay to an insurance company (if you're anywhere near my age) since you were a young bloke, would by now be enough to buy several Nortons.

I hope the car driver gets fined for something or she will do it again.

My 2 cents
Sorry to hear of your injury and the damage to your Commando, your contribution to this site and the Norton community are well respected and appreciated greatly. My father told me something that I have found to be very true over 40 years of riding motorcycles. My father said that I had to ride as if I were inviseable because automobile drivers all to often don't pay attention.
Best wishes for a full and quick recovery; as well as getting your Commando back on the road better than ever. To me it is especially sad when anyone who has spent a lifetime riding motorcycles can't ride anymore.

ken is referring to comprehensive insurance, which will cover repairs to your vehicle ( or another if you are at fault) different to the liability-type insurance which is compulsory. Comprehensive to a bike like the Commando with Shannons is very cheap, Ken, less than $200 a year. Anyway, hope you heal up well, i'm on a plane to NZ tonight to do some riding in the South Island. Any of you Kiwis on here, I'll be on a Red ZRX1200, black Nolan 102, based out of Christchurch and riding to all points from there. Hopefully get to the race meet at Ruapuna at the weekend.

No insurance, for many years! Here in the UK no insurance is treated as a major crime,so just to add more pain i suppose you will be getting a fine as well

I think they do insurance slightly differently down under?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_insurance
In South Australia, Third Party Personal insurance from the Motor Accident Commission is included in the licence registration fee for people over 17. A similar scheme applies in Western Australia.

So "no insurance" doesn't literally mean Fullauto had no insurance at all, only that the bike was not insured against accident damage.

Thank's Lab. I understand now,he ment he had TPFT.

[Edit]Probably just third party (not including fire & theft). It seems their third party state insurance only covers against personal injury liability but not vehicles, property etc. claims as we would expect TP to mean in the UK.

These state based third party insurance schemes usually cover only personal injury liability. Comprehensive vehicle insurance is sold separately to cover property damage and cover can be for events such as fire, theft, collision and other property damage.

Yes, correct.
Compulsory third party insurance is a large part of registration, it covers third person personal. Not another vehicle.
Eg, your pillion or car pasanger is covered, as is any other person injured as a cause of the drivers actions.

Yes, mate, that's the way I look at it. She won't be fined as there is no evidence that she did any wrong, according to the cop (who still hasn't interviewed me). I'm already planning the rebuild. the only spanner in the works will be if the frame is bent. It will be a few weeks before I am able to start pulling it down as we are shifting to the big smoke in ten days or so. The timing couldn't have been worse. Also, I get to repair it with my choice of bits and my labour so I can't complain about the quality.

Fullauto...I just went back to your initial post to better understand how this accident happened. I would definitely fight the above-referenced opinion! The same thing happened to me in '86 when an old woman in a white cadillac attempted to make a left turn (into a hearing aid store) in front of me and stopped dead in her tracks when she spotted me...unfortunately too late. The police sited her for "failure to yield the right-of-way" to me and I collected on her insurance. I'm not sure how the vehicular laws work in your part of the world, but the findings should be the same IMO....I would be very shocked the police woudln't find negligence on her part.

Hope you have a speedy, safe & full recovery. As has been said by many your input here is realy valued. I have day dreams of some day being able to put a bike togeather that would be of the caliber to justify having one of your heads. I too would fight the insurance co's claim that you are at equal responsibility. Just because you came from behind does NOT make you at fault due to her actions. A friend won a similar case when a guy accedentaly put his car in reverse & backed into him when trying to go forward. Here in Ca, USA we are forced to have liability insurance & although I truely think Insurance is legal robbery I have full coverage on 3 cars and two bikes! I am changing it to "agreed value" for the bikes & one car and dropping my work truck & my Dad's old Mercedes to basic just to save $ for this year. Time to get rid of the Mercedes & make room for another bike!!! God's speed on your recovery, & thanks for your input to our beloved hobby.

Sorry to hear of this Fullauto... what a mess.

I recently fit an HID headlight, and immediately it seems as though I'm being seen a bit more. The thing makes road signs glow in daylight from 500 feet.

Years ago I was in a similar wreck, ended up with a compound fracture to fibia and tibia. The doc told me I'd have a hard time walking normal for the rest of my days. Had three surgeries, and then my sister (an RN) insisted I take 500mg of vitamin C daily. I was out of the cast 3 months ahead of schedule, a wedge of tibia half the size of a gearshift rubber that had disappeared (left on the road?) completely re-grew. I'm 54 and hike in the mountains and play tennis-not very good though.

500mg of vitamin C daily.

cheers and a happy new year to all,

Don

Don't know how they look at things in OZ, but in the US you are almost always at fault if you rearend somebody, no matter what the circumstances. It's a pretty common insurance scam because it works so well, the old whiplash scenario.

As far as insurance goes, I listened to Philippe's advice after his accident and got insuranced up. Un-insured, under-insured, agreed value, and roadside assistance added around $150 per year to my policy on my Commando and VFR combined. I ride a lot and a week doesn't go by without a reminder that it's not a bad idea.

There's always the legal assumption one should be always be able to stop for something in the way but maybe for stop light runners. On my 2nd mild run in trip out on Trixie I almost T-Boned a mail truck at ~60 mph by following cluster of big twins ~150 yds behind around a bend to have the PU truck ever so slowly ease out to cross hwy. I missed tail gate by over a bike length and ditch by at least 6 inches to spare.

Impressive what the body can re-grow if nerve and blood supply carry what it needs. I highly recommend a bone-joint multi-mineral complex taken 3-5x's over labels daily dose, enough for definite relief but just short of loose bowels. If spinal and head trauma in addition then I take/give enough to give loose Bm's then back off some to function more than squirm and suffer. All pain drugs interfere with connective tissue like bone and blood and nerves recovery. I also take/give even higher doses of protelytic enzymes in trauma, poision/vemoms, infection and cancer till things settle down.

When I go to heavy duty parties or heavy duty riding on/off road or heavy duty labor like logging I take em ahead of time.

Its obviously youre fault , you were rideing a motorcycle . The view of any non motorcyclist .

If you were out for a trundle and not breaking the sound barrier , Id think her actions negligent , or intentional .

Rammed once in town , the Cops said ' Go Away ' . Went back and measued rubber tracks at 150 FEET ( 147 & 153 ) in a 30 mph Zone . Tossers . Straight up the rear of the car . Get professional advice .

Theres a bloke or two advertise in Two Wheels . DONT be reasonable with the enemy . Go for the Jugular . IF theyre prepared to be reasonable , you can back off .

Hung behind a Cortina for a mile once , as he appered to be lineing me up .Where the road widened in the 30 zone , left 3 lanes wide . He pulled to the verge , eyed me up , flicked indicator & gassed it across hard right , shopping centre opposite , Near stopped as his rear wheel caught my front pulling it right so Instrument houseing caught his tailight going over . Theres some maniacle , jealous , concieted homocidally inclined
pillocks about at times . Three people came over and said " HE did that deliberately " . obviously should have got their names . NEXt , hes abuseing Me , Verbally . ' Ya shouldve loked where you were going . ' .

Same town three guys , The Ex Duxes from Rangitoto Colledge were charged , when attempting to get a car off there mate , whod been dragged 150 ft under it , and wouldnt stop till theyed pulled up in front of it .
Treaded as criminals as they wernt Jap Mounted !? They believed he'd been intentionally run over / knocked of his bike . AND they behaved themselves on the things . 72 / 73 Triumphs , around 1977 .

IF that is the case , Id treat it as such .

Hey Fullauto, you must be alive because I noticed a post on another thread. How is the rebuild and the healing coming along?
