This thread brings to mind an excellent book by the late John Passini, which I read years ago.
It was about Weber carburettors specifically but it contained much info. about the fundamentals of carburation.
He explained that an internal combustion engine NEVER requires a rich mixture in the combustion chamber no matter how cold it is.
The reason chokes were needed was because in a multi cylinder engine with rather long inlet tracts, some of the fuel vapour condenses on the internal surfaces of the manifold when the engine is cold, resulting in a weak mixture in the cylinder.
On our Nortons with their short inlet tracts, the choke is pretty much superfluous.
The choke on my bike must have been removed long before I acquired it. I have never felt any need for it.
Cheers
