Another oil thread

This is what keeps things running smooth for me.

Another oil thread

I use mobil 1 15/40 . No visible wear at any part when doing preventative tinkering ! I rebuilt a humber sceptre mk3 engine, new rings , crank regrind, valves camshaft reborn +40 etc. Everything really. After running on old school oil for the first 1000 ml I changed to Mobil 1. After 70000 or so miles a valve burnt out due to cheap unleaded shit petrol ! On disassembly the engines top end had no noticeable wear anywhere. Like it had just been rebuilt ! Lifetime convert !! Roy. The bore had no wear whatsoever.

I believe is what spokesman Andy Granatelli said.

For a race bike viscosity is probably more important than wear characteristics, and particularly when the oil pump is gear type and not plunger. A gear pump can probably pass more garbage and still work. A plunger pump probably gives higher pressure, but garbage can hold the balls of their seats. Road bikes probably need more oil changes. They do a lot more miles. The oil which is currently in my bike is high detergent 50 something, and intended to be used in diesel motors. I have never worried about it as long as it is 50 viscosity. It has to float the big end bearings when the engine is hot.

That's nice Al!

Road bikes need more oil changes than race bikes?

First time I’ve ever heard that. I don’t quite know how you work that one out Al. It’s obviously the other way around.

I think Al needs an oil change, the sludge might be clogging his brain, sorry Al but some of the things you come out with, I think a race bike running flat out the oil will break down a lot quicker than a road going bike as we don't run flat out all the time on the road, if we did I am sure we be put off the road real soon.
Maybe your oil does out last everyone's bikes when it sits in the shed.

A Triumph plunger pump is NASA level stuff compared to the idiotic pump in the Enfield Interceptor Series 2. A lot of old bikes seem to have had, at best, barely enough pressure and flow. I guess it is easy to forget what the Depression, the War and Austerity did to budgets.

The late pump has only one side that is because the engine cases were changed from dry sump to wet sump. The bore of the pump was slightly increased in size to provide more oil. It is alleged to run at 60 psi which is a hollow joke once it warms. In
my humble opinion there is inadequate flow and pressure. My Commando will provide 42 psi all the time. The S2 will not make 60 once it warms. On a warm day 40 would be lovely but you will not see that reliably. In hot weather half that can occur. Some report less. Few pumps are as strange in design.

Popcorn : The best is apparently coconut oil , or for the buttery taste clarified butter . Do not use on older motorbikes . Have a great Halloween , lighting up the pumpkin and bowl of candy ready .
