Yup...care required
This youtube video is a cautionary tale
I like the pannier system. Thanks for posting it's got me thinking but I may go for the smaller 30L panniers.
Andy

One of my pals came to Applecross with me last year with a new set of ally boxes. We fuelled up at Fort William I pulled off the pumps to wait for him to finish which he duly did, setting off from behind a caper van he "forgot" about the panniers which resulted in a bang, a dented box and a broken rear light on the camper van. All worked out well as the camper was quite old and the owner just looked on eBay for the cost of a replacement lens and £20 later he was happy and laughing about what had happened, I knocked Rog"s pannier back in to shape and on we went. Rog was then permanently worrying about his panniers.... at least he didn’t forget about them again.

Indeed !!

I guess they look bigger than they are, plus you get used to them.

I had a courtesy BMW f800 (or sumthin’ similar, it wasn’t very memorable) once when my R9T was being serviced. It had those fashionable huge alloy Charlie and Ewan type ‘ammo boxes’ on the back.

I was happily filtering way (slow city traffic approaching the lights) when I remembered the panniers, so I stopped for a quick look behind me to calibrate myself by re-assuring myself I had lots of room to spare.

But I didn’t! I was a knats cock away from gouging the hell out of both cars I was about to zip in between !

That could have been awfully embarrassing ...
Ally boxes are great as the are top loading, you can use them as seats/tables etc. But unlike the general GS crowd mine are only attached if they are loaded all other times they are off the bike. I really have no idea why people ride round with them constantly attached.

Dave

They are Hepco & Becker Junior panniers which have a very good reputation for being durable and extremely waterproof.

Thanks Dave.

The manufacturer's site shows the entire range (incl. the Junior Flash versions).

Norman Hyde praises them:

Interesting to note the set of 30L panniers is more expensive in Germany than in the UK. I wonder how come. Usually factory outlets are cheaper.

After all the filtering comments I thought I’d measure the width of the KTM and the Commando with the boxes attached. Results as follows:

kTM 1.04m / 3’4”
Commando 0.9m / 3’

I don’t have any issues filtering with the KTM so the Commando will be a breeze. What I’m saying is don’t buy the 30 litre boxes on the basis that it will make a massive difference to you’re filtering ability, it really won’t.

Good , thoughtful info Dave thanks ! .... like you , I don’t understand guys riding around for a coffee & BS session , that have all luggage attached , sometimes with just dirty clothes inside , only time I’m out with panniers attached is when I’m on my way ... somewhere !

Got love your Commando :)

When I’m on the Norton I wear a backpack, but for serious grocery getting I take my /5 with Hepco and Beckers. Both are great, but the Commando is just so co
Sorry I have no idea, did the air head boxes have a retaining clip on the rear as the AN boxes have?

Dave
I have both Krauser and newer Hepco bags and frames. Tomorrow I’ll go do some swapping and measuring and report. I would love to have the ability to swap out bags between the BMWs and the Norton. The BMW bags have locking clips at the rear that engage with plates on the frames.

When I had a R90s mit der bags I soon found I left them on all the time because they made life a lot easier. Extra clothes both for cold and wet, tools (not that you needed them the stock kit was great) and a place to stash the helmet safely.
All this talk about racks and luggage makes me think about having that option on the Commando especially since Im currently fitting the big tank and a short seat.

Dave thanks for this.
When you have a chance would you mind measuring the width of one pannier?

Fantastic, I have Krauser panniers myself & would love to know if they will fit on the Hepco frames from AN, appreciate you looking at this :)

Andy, I’m in my workshop so now would be good :) From the outside edge of the pannier rail to the widest point of the box is 10 1/2”

Dave

What is the measurement from the edge of the rear mud guard curve to the outside edge of the pannier? In other words what is the total width of your
outfit for filtering purposes?

If you look at my previous post you’ll see the width measurement. Outside edge of the mudguard to outside edge of the pannier is 15”
