I doubt it. But I also doubt he went to Emgo, which was the topic of conversation (ie who made the Roadster tanks. That was Emgo, and an order of 500 had to be placed).

As an aside... are we sure the Street has a steel tank... I thought it was aluminium?

    Same with me.
All I'm saying is that it Matt (CNW) can get someone to make classic Roadster tanks, and he can sell them at a profit for $495, then sure as shit, those same people can make an affordable 961 Commando tank as well.

I don't think Matt is selling huge numbers of replacement tanks.
There can't be very many owners buying these.
    Yes they are obviously needed.
We do know that there are quite a few 961 owners that are disenchanted with their nylon Acerbis tanks.
These folks have the disposable income to spring for a new, hopefully well made, steel replacement tank, certainly if they paid $20K for their bikes.

Matt believes these tanks are good quality. That's good enough for me.

If CNW was to request their supplier to build two different replacement tanks, it could only reduce the cost per unit.
    Volume discount.

I'm not a businessman, but Matt is.
Hoping he chimes in on this thread.

I don't know if the Street tank is steel, could be aluminum, but then why paint it?
If the tin knocker can hammer and weld aluminum, he (or she - want to be inclusive here) can do the same to steel.

They are definitely aluminium tanks, as is the tail unit. Hand made on the south coast of England, and painted they’re around £3k

As mentioned earlier, the Roadster tanks currently on offer by Matt and a few other good retailers were made by Emgo. One reason they’re so good is they’re made on press tooling, they’re not hand made. As a result, the order had to be for a minimum of 500 before they would make the tooling.

Apart from having Norton on the side, the 961 tank is completely different, there is therefore no economy of scale involved with the Roadster tank. A 961 tank from Emgo would need new tooling, and would therefore need a minimum 500 piece order.

I can’t think of anyone willing to cough up the $ to order 500 steel 961 tanks. So this really is a none starter.

A smaller outfit who do hand made tanks would be your only option. But quality of these kind of tanks has been extremely variable (many examples of poor Interstate tanks, as well as some good ones), so you’d really need to go to a known source.

I did mention this topic, and this thread to Matt recently, and I can confirm he has zero intention of getting into the market for 961 tanks.

Holt works do a Buell tank (similar shape) for about £1000 - looks like that’s a minimum price for a polished metal tank. Manx tanks are £1100.
Still pricey and they might not be willing to do low numbers.

Have a look at the coming soon section.

    Great looking tanks.
I didn't know that Buell tanks had petcocks, I thought they were EFI.
I don't see any EFI tanks, all are petcock tanks.

I would think an EFI tank with fuel pump port, overflow, and vent tube line would cost more to build.

Nice find Bro ! Remind me again why we're doing this ? Because the price of a Norton Aluminum tank is too expensive .? And if we want it to match our bike we have to pay to get it painted. Will Norton paint the alum tanks if you request it ?

It’s Simon Parker , who is another one of those clever rare guys that can do anything with metal but I believe to have no shortage of customers for his bespoke one offs, my mate went to his workshop last year to have a tail piece made up for a Barry sheene replica

That is progress , because a while ago they would not paint them . Something about no paint shop in house. Now maybe they have a good painting supplier they can fall back on. About time !
