Adam,

I thought I mentioned this earlier, maybe not, from UK,

http://www.burtonbikebits.net/chainguar ... _engla.htm

about 1/3 the way down the page under Norton. I got it here for $135USD delivered. It's not bad, could be better, but it fits. Delivery took a while, like almost 3 weeks. I get stuff from RGM in 3 days. Go figure?

Hahahahaha when I said how'd u find it I only meant fit wise on ur bike, not how to find it on there website, I'm not that silly Dave atleast I don't think so :-) I've been thinking of getting one from normal although it's bare and I'd need to get it chromed which is no worries though

Sorry, Adam, I guess it got lost in translation from OZ to US. Seems like we use a bit different phraseology. It fit fine on the bike.

Sorry Dave noticed a typo in my last post was meant to say: I was thinking of getting one from Norvil bare metal though il have to get it chromed which is no hassle, ur bikes looking great mate well done u must be happy :-)

Wouldn't getting the chain guard bare and having it chromed be more that buying it from Burton? It certainly would be here in the US. Chroming for that here would probably run about $125-150USD, plus the guard. Walridge has them bare too just for info. Probably the same ones.

My petcocks work fine, no leaks, seem to shut off completely and the clear coat I put on the tank seems to be somewhat resistant to petrol. I dropped some on it, wiped it off and no marks but I haven't left it on to see what happens.

Slow progress lately. Got the helicoil repair kit for the 5/16-24 thread in the oil filter head and installed that so the oil filter is installed. Boy is that helicoil a cool product. Still have the leak in the front tyre and am waiting on a new tube and some Motion-Pro spoon type irons. Wiring harness figured out for the most part and into the headlamp and across the coils, even the switches on the left side, horn, flasher and dip switch. New shrink tubing on parts of the harness to clean it up. Only thing is the wire to terminal 4 on my headlamp switch is white/brown, not white/green like the wiring diagram says. I'll have to buzz it out. Rear tyre is off because I am still messing around with the speedo gearbox. Front brake system is off waiting until I have the front tyre issue fixed. Handlebars from Walridge were just OK, there is a mark on the left side where the chrome is not nice. I'll replace it with the stainless one from Fair Spares America later, should have done that to begin with. Levers installed, throttle twist grip installed. Messing around with the silencer dog leg mount, need to take it to the welder to have the stainless one I got from RGM beefed up and probably repair the original and send it out for chroming later this winter with the foot pegs and kickstart lever. Maybe next week I'll get it up in the garage and fill everything with oil and see if it will start. Found some 50W Valvoline Racing oil at the local auto store for $5.99/qt. I'll ask my young (late 50's) neighbor over to get it up the hill and see if he wants to help kick it over since Swooshdave is not running to VA. He's an ex-fire chef and looks real fit. I had an ex-Naval academy guy over the other day and he couldn't get it over the second compression either, he's fit, a couple years older than me but not heavy.

I'm not rushing it, I always get depressed when I finish a project.

The satisfaction of riding it will wash away any depression.

Besides, being a Norton you will never be done.

Yeah, I thought about that later, it will actually never be done.

Fiddling around with the coil bracket and wires all morning. What a job, I must have had it on and off at least 4 times to get everything adjusted right.

It has been a while since I've run with stock coils but shouldn't the "hump" on the coil brackets face inwards towards the centerline of the bike?

If what you mean by hump is the thing that holds the ignition capacitor on, that's the way I found it. It would be awfully hard to install the caps if it were on the inside, anyway I think they would interfere with each other, unless there is some other hump I am miss-understanding. Remember this 69, before they had the capacitor stack and the assimilator.

OK - Found an old brochure for 1970 showing the capacitors on the outside just like you have it.

http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Broch ... Norton.pdf

I think they must've used the same bracket on the later models just turned around. You're right - I forgot the older models had the caps hanging off the coils like that.

Looking good! Do you have the cool old-style small reflectors too?

Russ

The reflectors were the same as on the tail lamp assembly, except they are yellow and mount on an L shaped bracket that is mounted under the gas tank front rubbers. Same size as these.

I wish I could see where the double red wires mount in that brochure. I have them under the ground screw at the capacitor, but am not sure they go there. But there is no other bolt that they could reach and go under with the size of the round lug on them.

Got silencer SS bracket back from welder today. Welding looks better, but not a good finish job. I had to sand the hell out of it. Looks like they burned and ground on it a bit much. Oh, well. Installed bracket, rear mudguard, tail lamp assembly which is a pain in the pants. Took 3 assemblies because I kept putting it together wrong, but finally got it. Chain guard is going to take a bit of work to keep it from rubbing the chain and rubbing on the new shocks too. I'm not sure the powder coat helped there. Need to repaint the speedo gearbox, and then the rest seems good to go.

Carby's are ready, cleaned the pilot with the appropriate wire, new gaskets, o-rings, stay up floats. Not sure about the float levels, but I think I did what they recommended. I'll install them when I get it in the garage and put gas and oil in it. The carbs may go out this winter for sleeving.

Need to get it registered, titled and plates. Hopefully not an issue since I have the Maryland title in my name. I'm getting antique plates for it. I may save that until I really get it started.

Looking beautiful Dave well done, hey where did u source ur rear tail light assembly, i need one? is it a gennuine or repro(looks repro)?

Adam

Dave the red wires that you refered to are not the earth wires that go to your top engine mount?
