Video from today that goes with the pictures was interesting weather haha found a cool old school restoration garage that I've rode past loads of times so decided to stop and have a look.
I have a Commando alternator on my 99 and regularly use a heated jacket which gets well warm on only 50% heat. I also run the light on to burn up the spare charge.
The issues I had was that recent made alternators have mounting holes 1/16" bigger than the old alternators, This can be fixed with thin sleeves or better still make up some thicker studs.I also had to fit a spacer behind the new rotor and carve out a little of the potting resin to allow the leads to clear the primary cover. 140 watts.
Alls well in 650ss world using her all the time still checked the valve clearances perfect gonna give her an oil change this week as a matter of course. With all the winter an wet weather riding I wanna repaint a few brackets an when I do the oil change gonna fit a new sump nut while I'm at it.
Wanna repaint the exhaust brackets if I get a dry day to. Still gotta be my all time most favourite bike ever
Been considering some alternative mudguards to save the original front but not sure which ones next
Also been thinking of making a sump guard to keep the worst of the weather of the front of the engine.

My friday night 70 commando ride from Watertown NY at around 10PM and +5F/-15C for a run 125 miles to New Haven Connecticut. Had to stop after about 50 miles...
That Sunday afternoon on the return trip I blew up the commando at approx 115 indicated ( they all lie)
I was 20 years old
Weird weather.
Normally it's getting cool here in BC, Canada by now but not this fall.
Day time temps are in the 70s f
and going into the 80s later in the week.
Im tempted to squeeze in a 400 mile day ride. Cannot get interested in overnight due to Covid.
I was referring to last winters riding an been quite a load of wet day riding over the past few months although I don't mind it 650ss has to be one of the most planted bikes I've ever rode in the wet
Know what you mean Glen it's been a pain with regards to Covid itching to do some overnight trips again.
Gonna repaint the exhaust brackets an look at a r/h silencer as there's a bit of rust on the underside + repaint the bottom of the hagon shocks. Then shes's back to her best.
Just waiting on my oil change stuff to turn up then she's set for winter riding.
IMHO I’d keep the original mudguards on the bike. I might remove them to paint and / or waxoil the undersides, and I’d certainly keep the chrome protected with ACF50 or similar in the winter months.
The beauty of your bike is it’s originality. Its a slippery slope if you start removing parts to protect them... where does it end ? In trying to protect the bike you actually detract from it...
Good point mate was just something I was thinking of as it took me a while to get a front guard might keep an eye out for a second one been keeping on top of them original chrome on the front one, got to sort the rear guard out at some point got the repro one from the owners club to replace the pattern one from the rear but need to find somewhere to chrome it keep looking for an original one for the rear as you say I love the originality of her.
Gotta be said she's by far my favourite bike I've ever owned Commando is a very close 2nd then the 16h a close third.
Did some work on the 650SS today Oil Change Filters an checked the points an timing all perfect Still starting first kick which is great. Managed to get it all done before the forecast rain (gotta work outside at the mo) then it didn't rain lol! I'll drag the gopro out with me this week an do a bit of filming on her.
One thing I wouldn't mind doing is drilling the correct style re mudguard I got for her from Noc fitting the correct rear fastener for the seat then getting it chromed. Been keeping an eye out for an original one as I think new chrome is gonna stick out like a sore thumb but nothings come up yet.
Had a spin out on the 650ss up the Cat and Fiddle. Superb as always need to drop the idle a notch on her as the monoblocs are a pain on an incline at traffic lights. Apart from that all great!
Need to do a bit of cleaning up on a few bolts here an there but shes held up great.
Norton 650ss ^-^ up the Cat and Fiddle had a spare 30 mins the other day so had a wander out on the 650ss. No music on this one as the audio came out good totally one for headphones. Hope you all enjoy.
Had a spin out again today such a cool view from the 2nd pull in could see for miles today didn't stay out to long as it was fairly late when I got out roads were crazy busy to, always funny when peoples first question when you are having a break is to ask are you are broken down. Good to see the biker spirit is still alive though.
Next thing I need to do is get my Norton Owners club rear mudguard Chromed.
Quite understandable if people seeing an English motorcycle at the side of the road asks if it has broken down.
Your pics inspires me to continue rebuilding my 650SS.

At lease the speed camera is in the open here in my State they are hiding them in junk cars on the outside but modernised in the inside to run the cameras on the side of the road or hide them where you can't see them till you get the ticket, they even got cameras for picking up holding a mobil phone in your hand $1k fine for that one and they keep sayin for road safety only, yeah we know our GOV is broke and need to make cash off us suckers .
Love your 650 Slimline and must start back on my Manxman project bike and start chasing a few bits for it, mine is building it into a Cafe Racer as its was a ex race bike and lots of original parts missing.
Off topic: In Sweden we have more and more speed cameras. But to get a ticket the photo must have a readable front licence plate and an identification of the rider. No front plate required on a bike and a full face helmet = no ticket. There is also warning signs at least 250 meters before the cameras.
