I am getting my 1971 Roadster tank and side-covers painted black...and I am ignorant. :?

I have ordered the decals from Old Britts for the tank/side-covers. Is there a standardized location for them?

Also, the pin-stripe that outlines the forward bulbous portion of the tank (just in front of the knee indents), is that standard for a 1971 Norton Commando?

Thanks,

Nathaniel

I think the 'D'-shaped pinstripe was only on the '71 Roadster.
Here's a '71 brochure for reference:

No stripes on the '72, except for the Interstate:

Stripes on the '73 850s, but not on the Short-stroke 750s

Same stripes for '74 and '75

While I'm at it, no stripes for 68-70, except the pinstripe dividing the colors on the early fastback two-tones

and remember to put the side cover decals on parralel to the ground, not parralel to the top of the covers!

This is so important as far as I'm concerned. I've seen so many beautiful paint jobs degraded because the side cover decals were tilted up to the right on a 20 degree angle. I've even seen them put on wrong on some of the bikes in the old Norton ads.

The black with single gold 'D' pinstripe scheme was certainly used not only on '71, but also '72 and '73 750 Roadsters.

I just love those old Norton ad girls. They all looked like their pants slid off so easily... and would even believe you if you told them you were a movie producer.

Run a straight edge down the rear loop and across your side covers and set your decals parallel to that.

I`m in the process of respraying my tank.
Just a thought , can you get a paint colour for the lines to match the decals, as they are bought ready coloured.

My paint guy can match pretty much any color. He is top notch.

Some paint shops will use a spectrometer of sorts to match it up.

I am considering doing my tank without the stripe...just keep it simple and clean.

Robb - Only if you had a Norton!

LAB - Missed that, but no 'D' stripes shown in any of the brochures except '71.

Yes, unfortunately neither the '72 or '73 brochure features a black 750 Roadster, and black was the only standard Roadster scheme to have the 'D' pinstripe, however it is listed in the parts books for '72-73 750 Roadster.

Here's me on my first Commando in 1973. It's a '72 combat that had 300 miles on it when I bought it a couple of months before this photo.
D shaped pin stripe definitely on '72, but only on the black ones.

With the "D-shaped" stripe, how do I achieve this (and get it to match up with) my "Norton" tank decals from Old Britts?

Do I get my painter to match the decals and then have a pin-striper do them, or is there an additional decal kit for them?

Thanks,

-simpson
