I bought this cheap to modify, but it does look like original gelcoat, does it look like grenadier red ? Possibly faded?

No. Also this is a fiberglass oil tank cover for 1971 and 1972 roadster. Grenadier red was not a color option in these years. The red for these two years was signal red….like my ‘72 roadster.

Don't know if this helps. 1975 Mk. III I am pretty sure original paint, candy apple red??? I assume that is the paint code on the bottom. Getting ready to send it out for repaint. It now has aged crackle finish! Stripes are brushed on. Norton decal on top of clear.

Hope this is not too far off topic. Did the black bikes with gold trim tank and side cover come with silver Norton logo on the back of the seat?
I bought a year old commando, black / gold used in 1973 and seem to remember the seat logo being silver but not sure. The bike I have now ( made July,71 bought in 1990 ) is black / gold but not original color had a fiberglass seat pan and gold logo.

Using Duplicolor base colors work great. But don't use their clear coat. If you dribble a little gas it will soften it. Use Spraymax 2K clearcoat instead. Can use over the Duplicolor base color and provides a much tougher final coat.

Was Yellow used in 1975 on the Mk III 850 Commando's? I want to find one and paint it yellow.

Yellow wasn't a standard 850 Mk3 colour.
How important is it to have a correct color, I know on some cars it matters and others it does not matter. Ferrari for instance which you would think original color would be paramount it does not matter. Alfa Romeo's are expected to be original color same with Packard which is the reason I ask. I like Yellow and want to have through acquiring or restoring a mk III in yellow preferably. Thanks

What colors were used on the mk III I also like blues, reds but not real keen on silver or black.

For selling it can be somewhat important. If not planning on selling, you should do whatever you like.
