Uncommon tank paint?

I changed this ‘73 750 from black roadster to this interstate. I had a bicycle painter company called Javelot do the finish…it’s a 1980 Mazda color. In 1984 original interstate tanks were fairly easy to find. All steel original tanks are scarce these days.View attachment 106537
Very nice mate...We share the same taste in colours also...
I made my own transfers and painted my Roadster a couple of years ago in Daytona Grey Pearl (Audi) which is still a option for their new vehicles today.

It is actually a starter motor blanking plate for the original Lucas starter motor that was never fitted.
Not for a magneto or distributor and doesn't have the same opening/stud spacing as the mag. or 20M3 points housing.
Interesting. I guess I had heard about the starter.

My parts book shows the tach drive on the end of the camshaft and lists a bunch of parts for contact breakers (associated with the alternator) and a distributor drive chain...

Ooops. Dang. It's upside down and the little rotate button didn't fix it. In any case, 03-0082 is not a cover that would fit on the timing cover.

It does not list any sort of advance mechanism.

I can only imagine the maintenance a starter motor would create bolted up to the back of the timing case...

The early parts book is pretty hopeless, with quite a few big gaps.
The '69-'70 updates also miss a few items too.

Fortunately, the Andover Norton website fills some of the gaps:

Yes, for the 20M3 (twin chain and points housing behind the cylinders) engine although not a "distributor" in the usual meaning of the term (distributes HT to the plugs via a rotor arm) or the 20M3S and later points housing in the timing cover must also be a 'distributor'.

In any case, 03-0082 is not a cover that would fit on the timing cover.

Yes, it's the 20M3 points housing "Contact Breaker" cover.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. THe bike is a '71 but I rarely see tanks painted this way so I wasn't sure if it was normal.

Its a fiberglass tank. The stripe is definitely hand painted. I've done the fork seals and fuel lines - that photo was older. This is more recent.
