1967 Norton Atlas Gearbox

I went through the gears using the bolts protruding from the gearbox shell and with the outer cover off. What I found was kind of interesting. With the quadrant arm all the way up and almost touching the upper end of the rectangular hole through the inner cover, I thought I was in 4th but as I back down there is only one gear that clicks in before I hit neutral and then 1st. when in 1st, the quadrant arm is 3/8' away from the end of the rectangular hole in the inner cover. I'm now thinking that what I thought was 4th is actually 3rd. What are peoples thoughts as to what is happening here? I think I know. I received my new ratchet spring yesterday and it was substainially different in it's geometry than my old one. Holding the outer cover with everything installed it seemed to operate the pawl nicely.

You are off a tooth. That must be fixed before thinking about the outer cover. Pull both shafts and the gears. Pull the camplate bolt. Slide the camplate out partly you can turn it one tooth. Put the bold back in loosely. Check all gears by looking at the plunger and camplate. Put the inner cover on just enough to be sure you can get all four. Then put the shafts and gears back in.

The best source on Norton gearboxes I know of is the Mike Hemmings video sold by Norton Owners Club. A couple of years since I did a Norton gearbox. But I remember that even if you are on the right tooth of the quadrant, it is sometimes necessary to enlarge the square hole slightly for top gear to engage. Don't remember if top or down.

Thanks. Pulled it apart and did find that it was off. Fixed the problem the hard way but won’t forget it! Thanks for the help
