1967 Norton Atlas Gearbox

I went through the gears using the bolts protruding from the gearbox shell and with the outer cover off. What I found was kind of interesting. With the quadrant arm all the way up and almost touching the upper end of the rectangular hole through the inner cover, I thought I was in 4th but as I back down there is only one gear that clicks in before I hit neutral and then 1st. when in 1st, the quadrant arm is 3/8' away from the end of the rectangular hole in the inner cover. I'm now thinking that what I thought was 4th is actually 3rd. What are peoples thoughts as to what is happening here? I think I know. I received my new ratchet spring yesterday and it was substainially different in it's geometry than my old one. Holding the outer cover with everything installed it seemed to operate the pawl nicely.
