I agree there's great healthcare in the UK too if you can afford it !
In every supermarket we have a food collection bank for people that can't afford to eat

Over here, people that can't afford medical / insurance have Medicaid which they get FREE, all taxpayers get to pay for it even if we have to buy our own "insurance" that is overpriced, and STILL doesn't cover much of the typical needs. It's mainly just to keep us from going bankrupt if we are hospitalized.

When I broke my leg in 2019 in a bike accident, I had to sell 6 bikes to pay for the surgery to install a plate in my Fibula. One more bike crash and I could be out of motorcycles...

Did the same slammed a car broke foot big time, both wrist and seven teeth cost over 30,000 in 1986 , hospital fixed me up nice but those bill didn’t go away on there own I had zero insurance and about the same in money, luckily no assets for creditors to seize .

Don’t know myself and actually medical bills 35 years ago were not held against a person’s credit rating , that could have changed but for sure medical bills only go away with payment there is no forgiveness other than bankruptcy .

I believe that's statistically true, but nothing is black and white. The people who lose their homes to medical bills are not people who own trailers or a house in the swamp their grandparents left them; they are people who bought into houses above a rational price, were marginal in their ability to pay for the mortgage and had no cushion for anything to go wrong. The 'default crisis' is more a consequence of predatory, government-insured credit coupled with lack of imagination in the borrower than of unexpected bills.

In ‘92 broke my leg in 3 , while playing with our 2 toddlers in woods , painful and hr away from help , kids helped me slide on one of their plastic sleds to roadside while Jo went for car couple miles away , that was a Sunday , on the Wed. Bone Dr. put 8” bolt in and up to tie all pieces together , wait 6-8 wks then removed both done while I sedated , then some painful early re-hab , and back to work after 10wks , cost to me was few 120km long trips to Halifax which were tax deductible , that it , asked for bolt once I learned not re-useable , not sure why I don’t have it ….

I'm off work at the moment after having a full knee replacement
I had been waiting for around 4 years for the NHS
But basically they forgot about me
Then they offered to fund me to have it done privately which I accepted
So now I am off work for 12 weeks with no pay
I do get the government sick pay of £99 per week,I'm thankful for that but it doesn't cover my outgoings at all
If this had been a few years ago when I had a mortgage and kids at home I would not have had the operation it's as simple as that
I wouldn't have been able to feed everyone and pay a mortgage
It's a stark choice sometimes

Not sure how that works here , every employer different , at the time my pay was covered 100% by employer , I did loose my regular overtime pay ,but as I wasn’t doing too much , turned out okay , just enough for my house beer !

I had medical insurance 4 years in the Navy in the mid-70s, then again MANY years later from about 1998-2005. Other than that, we have somehow managed to get along without medical insurance until 2021. I just dropped a RIP-OFF "heathcare marketplace" Bronze plan that covered ZERO, paid ZERO, and jumped from $232/month to $1,282/month WITHOUT my consent on the auto-draft (Credit card company is working to refund the difference to me).

I don’t believe in banks …. deal at local Credit Union , we don’t borrow money , we think it a bad idea …. we both worked and saved , if we needed something I built it , if not skilled enough friends were , a benefit of staying in same place we were born …. we did have a mortgage for first house restore project , interest at that time was 19 3/4% , once we finished that place and sold that was it ….

We are lucky here in Australia we have Medicare, pay 2% I think in our taxes, have free Hospitals and most local Doctors bulk bill, also have Medicare private insurance for people who can afford it but they keep going up every year, I am no longer working and have had a few trips to the emergency a few times from home accidents and a bike throw down many years ago to be patched up, no cost to me, just had 3 skin cancers cut out the last 6 weeks at my local medical centre, all bulk billed and at no cost to me and follow up visits for stitches to be removed and get the all clear, I get a blood test every 3 months at no cost under bulk bill and follow up at the Docs.
When the GOV at the time wanted to change things and become more like the US of A in how things work there the GOV got kicked out real quick.
A riding mate of mine had a crash 100 miles from home serious broken leg and arm, was flown out by chopper to the nearest hospital then transferred to Brisbane at no cost to him and 1year off work from his injuries, if you go for a insurance claim and win they will factor all those cost in the pay out so when you do get a pay out offer always include cost in the pay out if you don't you might get bitten with Law fees and medical cost we also pay third party insurance on top of our rego for accidents as well private insurance of our vehicles as well, we are pretty lucky in how things work here, but of course it has its problems as well as waiting times can be long in our hospital system, but emergency's do get looked after, private Medicare can be a lot quicker but even paying your cover does not cover all cost and still have to pay more on top of any medical problems and then you get the greedy Private doctors who will not bulk bill and charge outrages fees.
Its not a prefect system but it works even when they have big cut backs to the Hospitals and a lot of research get grants and donations to keep going.

I wouldn't have done it, but my wyfe waited patiently for THIRTY FIVE YEARS, then we got our first brick house on a slab (we've lived in a single-wide mobile home, then a double-wide in all that time). Since she had the down payment, we went for it at 5%. We just got the re-fi in January, at 3.5%, well worth the fees to do the deal, saving a huge pile in interest, and feeling the savings every month, so NICE. Plus, it's a very nice house even though the gestapo run the HOA...
