Hello everyone,

We thought it was a good idea to post an announcement about editing previous posts/ topics. As you know the 3rd party photo sharing company called photo bucket is now charging for the service. Access Norton members have thousands of photos linked from there to our forum. Now all we see is place holder images, and that does not help anyone. I understand there are some fixes for this, but it involves editing previous posts. I have changed the forum settings so you can edit posts.

Please can you login and edit your previous posts that have images from photo bucket. Either remove the old broken photos links or fix them. This will help others trying to learn how to fix their bikes.

Feel free to add to this post with instructions on how to fix photo bucket (I dont know how).

"Fix" Photobucket? I don't see that happening anytime soon.
In the meantime, I have downloaded all of the albums to my computer, then deleted the Photobucket account. Once I sign up for a VIP account (which I should have done years ago), the images will be stored here, with links into earlier posts. There's 173 images in the "Norton" folder alone, plus some others that have been linked to. This ought to make for some long evenings in front of a computer... Thanks, Photo F*ckit!

I thought I saw someone mentioned there was a way to see the images by appending the url with ~original. I am sure they will turn that off soon though (look in other thread about this).

Why a two week limit? To replace those Photobucket photos, you have to go back and find your old posts, figure out which photos might have been posted, find those photos in your files, copy and downsize them to this forums required(??) limit, and then make the edits. I realize this sounds like fun and I'll happily do it as time permits, but this may not be the most pressing thing that needs attention around my house. I think the majority of us can spot pissing contests when we see them, and don't go back and re-read them just in case they have been edited.

I changed my post for you so it does not say 2 weeks anymore.

Its actually forever that you can edit posts now (or until we get complaints about it again). In fact as VIP you can always edit your posts anyway.

BTW- I thought using the Google drive idea was a great idea. They won't charge you.

Flickr is owned by Yahoo (if you follow what's happening in the world of online giants, you'll know why that's a bad thing), and you are likely to end up in the same scenario there as with photobucket (maybe 1-2 years out at this point)

I'm looking into Fotki. Recommended on another hobby forum. Anyone have experience with them? They charge a fee but even there 1 TB is 8$/month. Their webpage even welcomes ex photobucket users.

I've uploaded new photo URLs to two of my threads now - thanks Jerry.

An easy way to get new URLs for your photos is at:

Sign up, create galleries and arrange your photos. Hit "share" link for URL to post in forums

Another way is google drive thanks to some help from Acadian as follows:


- First size your image to a max of 800 pixle width
-hit "new" button to create a folder for the images you want to post
- hit "new" button and upload any photos you want to post online in that folder
- then select the uploaded photo, right click on it and choose "get sharable link"
- in the window that pops up choose "sharing settings".
- copy the link, the last word in the link should be "sharing"
(also click on "advanced settings and make sure your link preference is set to "public"

then go to:
http://gdurl.com/

paste in your link and choose "permalink".

-choose "standard URL"

- copy the "standard URL pemalink" and paste it into the forum post, Be sure to place the link between image tags as below:

(you can choose image tags when posting).

You can save the permalink somewhere or paste the Google drive "sharing" link into http://gdurl.com/ at a later time and it will generate the same permalink for you.

Sometimes its tricky maneuvering through the folders in google drive but if you keep clicking on the next folder you'll get there. When you get to the last folder where all your folders are available - save that link for reference.

Its a hassle but it works.

My photobucket account reached the limit and the images are now blocked. I just tried the ~original trick and it worked! For how much longer, I cannot guess.

When I get a chance I'll look at my old posts and try to fix what I can.

I suggest members PM the author when they turn up a post with images deleted by Photo Bucket, and provide the link to it.

I just ran an SQL query on the database and there are 22319 photobucket URLS in the database. I am trying to figure out how to find a list of posts that have these.

Thought I'd post this picture tutorial for anyone considering using Google Drive for their forum posts moving forward, if you subscribe to any google online product (Gmail etc..) you automatically have access to G-Drive and a free 15 GB of storage (google is not going to flip the "pay to play" switch anytime soon, unlike any of the other smaller private image hosting services), you can use G-Drive's mobile application on your phone, and G-Drive also has its own photo editing app so you can "photoshop" your pics right in the application:

The first few steps can be the most complicated, but you only need to do this once as it involves setting up a dedicated folder on G-Drive to store/host your forum pics

Step 1 - Find your "Public" folder on G-Drive (it's automatically created, and should be visible as soon as you open the app)

Step 2 - Control/right click the "public" folder and from the pop out menu select "share", look to the bottom right for the "advanced" button, and make sure that the setting under "who has access" is set to "Public on the web", if it's not, click the "change" button and enable this setting

Step 3 - Not necessary, but it's a good idea to create a sub folder in the public folder to contain your forum images (in this case it's labelled "bikes")

The preliminary folder set up is now done, and you can simply upload any of your forum pics directly into the folder you created to store them

Step 4 - Once you've uploaded images, you edit them in G-Drive by right/control clicking the image and selecting "Open With", and then "Pixlr Editor" from the pop out menu (this is just like photoshop right in the app, you can crop, scale, resize etc...)

Editor interface: Pixlr Editor defaults to saving copies of photos, so unless you want to have a bunch of duplicates, be sure to uncheck the box that says "save as copy" in the save dialogue window

Step 5 - Now that you've got your photos uploaded & edited, you have to generate the embedding link (google doesn't provide this automatically), right/control click the image you want to post and select "Share"

You are looking for the sharing link created by Google that ends with "sharing", if you dont see the sharing link when the window pops up, simply click the "advanced" button in the bottom right of the window and the correct link will appear pre highlighted

Step - 6 Once you've copied the sharing link from G-Drive, go to this URL (http://gdurl.com/) and paste the link into the field at the top, select "generate perma link", and your postable image link will appear at the bottom

That's it, once you've gone through the initial set up, step 5 is really all you need to repeat to post images (step 4 is the image editing which is optional)

I've had a problem with replacing the photobucket links with the postimages link
During the process of finding my failed PB links (Forum & Google search only found half of them - had to check my post history) I occasionally had one of the postimages links not work.
An example is the first post in '64 650SS Downunder - you'll see one of the photos hasn't worked
Not sure why, any advice?

My recent adventures with Photobucket include:

-Getting bombarded by advertisements to the point of nearly being unable to use the service at all.
-Not being able to download my albums to my computer.
-Going thru each photo in my albums on Photobucket, right clicking, selecting "save image as" and downloading them all to a folder on my computer. I decided this was easier than editing all of the original photos (if they existed) to the correct size. I have been slowly fixing old links using these downloaded photos.
-While going thru old threads, sometimes when I right click on a photo and select "display in new tab" it will display the original photo, whether or not I was the poster. No clue why it doesn't work every time.
-Additionally I have not found a good way to search out my photo links, other than looking at old threads from "my posts".

I wonder if anybody is paying their ransom to keep the service. The rate is over the top. Do you suppose that if nobody buys in that they might reconsider their rate to a more reasonable fee? Or will they let the site disappear completely?

I hope that others feel as I do that saving these old threads is worth the effort. I have not really contributed much to this forum other than being a willing idiot who will ask the stupid questions. However, if I can supply labor in helping to preserve old threads, I am willing to volunteer it.

I pulled all of my albums from their site, closed my account, and wrote a (hopefully) diplomatic explanation as to why a large unnamed forum (guess who) and myself were liberating ourselves from their services. They have my email; no reply at all. A Mustang forum I'm part of is going through the same steps.

First time I clicked on a photobucket photo link, I knew I didn't like it. That was 2005. Around 2008, I stopped clicking on photobucket links altogether with very few rare exceptions when people asked my to give an opinion on something they photographed, and then only grudgingly.
