The end of a good photo hosting site

Upon checking, it appears we missed about 10,000 images for some reason. So approx 28,000 images got converted to our hosting. I am running the script again today to try and catch the last 10,000 pics.

No problem.

The script finished, it took hours. I am not sure if it worked or not. Paul, please can you send me a link to one of your old images so I can check? I think it worked as we are using 15GB more space now.

Cheers
Jerry, this thread had lots of pix...

The problem is, I think it's past the 2-week close out of PictureTrail (about the end of january), so the destination of the links is GONE.

Yep, if they already closed it’s too late, it will import their place holder. Wish I knew before

Curious? did it go out and harvest all external pix. I host 98% of the pix I post here on my own web sites server. It is a pain as I have to take a pix and transfer it to my web server or it won't show up on your site. and I often have no need for it my self ....it is for the guys,,,,

Hi Dave,

I ran the script again today. There were 10,000 pics that did not get converted. I will check if they did tomorrow. I think the only way is to inspect the image and see where it’s hosted. Obviously I am not going to check 30 thousand pics. I will update you here later after I get a chance to have a look. Going to be a day or 2 as weekends are for riding, especially when we are having a heatwave here lol 64 degrees

Is it possible that the 10,000 pics are not on the hosted sites anymore. I run into posts here with the Red X in the image space on occasion. Does your script check if the pic is at the other end of the link or not before trying to do the conversion? Just guessing. I don't even know if it's possible. I'm not a programmer.

I am not sure yet. I seem to be running out of server space since I did this.
Did the script down sample incoming image files before saving? Don't need full resolution for web browser display generally. Gobs of storage saved by down sampling.

Perhaps instead of doing all of the images all at once you can set up a script to target certain hosting sites. Then when we get a notification that a host will be going down you can just run the script against that site. That will save your server space for just what is needed to archive and then you're not storing images that are properly hosted.

That does introduce a risk that a site might get pulled down unexpectedly but that would be unusual.

Yes, I need to look into it some more. It’s just time and super busy with work and the BSA, the BSA gearbox is driving me nuts. I am not a patient person and waiting for parts or even sourcing parts is much harder than for a Norton Commando. I will update you all later on this image issue venture, cheers

Those older bikes require a lot of patience. Parts are not readily available (we're all spoiled by Commandos) and it takes a while. Can't just be a credit card build.

'The free market takes care of everything' ? There is obviously no money to be made out of hosting pictures.
