The end of a good photo hosting site

Just got an e-mail notifying me that my photo hosting site, PictureTrail, is shutting down it's servers in less than 2 weeks.

I really like the site, it's easy to use, relatively cheap, and ANYONE can go directly from one of my photos wherever I post it, and view the rest of that album, or my entire public collection.

So, all the photos that I posted on this site (not using this site's upload/attach features) will soon simply display "Link Not Found" or "too bad, sucker, photo is gone".

I'm not about to go back to a dozen forums and re-load THOUSANDS of photos.

Sorry.

That seems to happen a lot and ruins a lot of good reference material (and not just on this forum). Since it's now easy to upload photos directly to the site, why would anyone use a photo hosting site

I set up that account in 1999. Back then, this and several other forums I'm on, didn't exist, much less have photo hosting.

I have to say, I haven't used it much in the last 5 years, but all the photos that are in threads I posted on Delphi and several British and/or brand/model specific sites more than 20 years ago, will now be gone to those members still around (and there are quite a few)

Paul, thank you for the "heads up". I will be spending the next 14 days downloading all your threads with photos relating to the Mk III. FYI, for anyone else doing this, Firefox and Edge will work. However, they both have a tendancy to split photos between pages. I'm using Acrobat Pro, which rarely does that. It also allows me to edit the PDFs created.

I have not figured out how to post pics to this site yet.

Ok, should have clarified "easy" was for VIP members (which is a nominal fee that supports the site).

Instructions for non-VIPs....

So far I have been really happy with Imgur. Like I said it hosts billions of memes so a couple motorcycle photos is nothing. Just make sure you mark them as Hidden.

Perhaps there might be a away to Jerry to "harvest" linked images on threads that are destined for oblivion and have them saved on these servers? Only for select/useful threads from VIP members?

That would be one heck of a time-consuming task for a forum owner who has MUCH better things to do. Like working on his BSA!

A previous suggestion was to grab threads and save to PDF....instead of each interested member doing this to make their own private archive, why not put those PDF's on the forum as files attached to the corresponding threads?

I can do that if/when required for the info I have converted to PDF.

Again, as if @Jerry Doe didn't have better things to do...

I am going to try and sort this out.

At this time there are 38434 hot linked images here since 2014.

Stay tuned...

I have been running a script that is checking 500,000+ posts for images served externally and then converting the same images to local hosting. As mentioned there are 38,434 pic. It has been running for an hour or so and 100,000+ posts have already had their images converted to my hosting, so Paul, we should be ok when they shut down that external image service, you pics will remain intact (Use the VIP image option to upload images so this does not happen). I think its going to run for another 2 or 3 hours, then we can check to make sure this was successful. Note this is for all images, not just VIP images.

I will update you all here, Jerry

WOW.

Thanx, man.

No problem.

The script finished, it took hours. I am not sure if it worked or not. Paul, please can you send me a link to one of your old images so I can check? I think it worked as we are using 15GB more space now.

Cheers
