What's happening at Norton? Sale to TVS, massive investment, new bikes...

Hope? Yes, I certainly hope they succeed. Happy to maintain a balanced view, as I see it Voodoo.

I think if the SP proves to be a reliable machine, then that’s an awesome outcome for those guys that buy. They get the bike that each of us fell in love with, deserved but never received. Hopefully all of the good stuff without the bad.

Not only that, but it will also be somewhat unique right? It ain’t a tainted Donington machine for a start. And, who is ever gonna build another air-cooled, push rod, parallel twin with the authentic, classic ride experience that provides? Want a turbine smooth, water cooled classic - take yer pick.

Did Garner know the 961’s days were numbered or his own? Was the sale of the 961 engine to China not just a last minute cash grab as he was on his way outa the door? That’s certainly how it seemed.

Don’t think we can say that Adv bikes are a new trend, although they are getting even bigger. And rightly so, they are awesome. The cafe racer type bike seems as popular as ever with the majority of manufacturers having models in their line-up for 23-24. There are also an inordinate number of custom builders doing a full range of cafe bikes. I’d be surprised if they’re on the way out. Have you read something in the motorcycle press?

I’d take a bet that Norton’s next bikes will be ICE and as they’ve hinted, something for everyone - meaning price range I guess. I don’t believe for a moment that these will come out of India. Nor that the EV will be next cab off the rank. Could be wrong though - often am!
This guy does a reasonable laypersons job of explaining that yes, the cafe racer does indeed seem to be in decline as far as new bike sales go. Triumph obviously have much more knowledge of the market trends, and they are pulling the plug on the Thruxton. So on balance, the evidence is that the cafe racer is becoming out of favour with new bike buyers.

And I have to confess to being somewhat interested in a bike with FE logos emblazoned on it !!

Moto Bob is pretty slick presentation wise FE and certainly seems to know ‘his eggs’! Can’t argue with the figures, although surprisingly low in some instances. Cafe racer popularity diminishing - it seems so!

Money? More difficult to come by since the pandemic and an ongoing cost of living dilemma. Money resting more with crusty old dudes who want comfort over cafe cred? I’m clutching! More than a fad though - a whole biking sub culture. Search on YouTube and ya may be surprised what Norton and Triumph started way back when!

That Final Edition (FE) looks sweeeet and has literally got your handle all over it! Despite my natural aversion to anything green, I would love that sat in my garage - behind the Norton of course! Still doesn’t top the TFC though; my neighbour has one - just arranged to go for a ride so I’ll post the pics.

bike sales? what sells!??
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is a parallel twin retro-styled motorcycle introduced by Royal Enfield in 2018. It is the first modern twin cylinder motorcycle developed by the company.

In 2017 it was revealed, inspired by the 1960s Interceptor which had a 750cc engine. The Interceptor 650 was unveiled alongside the Continental GT 650, which shares the same engine.

What is the sales figure of the Interceptor 650?

The company has now managed to push the sales figures of its Continental GT 650 and the Interceptor INT 650 by as much as 67% in the month of April. The company sold a combined 2,159 units in April 2022 which is significantly up from 1,293 units in the corresponding month a year ago.

then go from there ffs

To be fair to Norton, I dont think it's sales could fairly be compared to a company that sells a product for a 3rd of the price.
Got to say though, BSA and Royal Enfield are pretty exciting brands....I feel like they're steadily building a solid reputation with good affordable bikes. Both have a great dealer network already.....and people are buying them in more importantly really enjoying them too.

That’s actually exactly what I concluded. The Thruxton FE is basically a stock bike with a different paint job (and not one that I really like personally).

The TFC however, is dripping in carbon, has Ohlins forks, a host of other upgrades, and is actually going to be the highest spec and best looking Thruxton ever made. Plus it’s a numbered / certified limited edition.

Shit… I’m talking myself into one…!

How many 961 bikes do you think sold in the last 10 years?
How many new cafe bikes do you think sold in the last 10 years?
The sales numbers are dropping.

Compare that to scramblers and adv bikes. The numbers are not even close if you compare them. Especially in the last 2-4 years.

The cafe bikes will always be a loved classic, but like everything, trends come and go, and like it or not, the scrambler and ADV bikes are in the spot light now and the sales prove that.

It’s like the days of those lame choppers.
Thank god those are gone.
All those tv shows of the choppers, reignited the chopper trend, it died off after a few years then cafe bikes came back.

Honestly, I don’t really care what Norton does anymore. I also don’t care if they make it or fail. I’ll never buy one of their products. Not the way they do business. I’ll pass.
What makes you believe they’ll offer a new model of their own making and use a ICE? I’m not talking about the V4 bikes either.

I’m talking about a clean slate and a brand new bike that they make from scratch. It will not be an ice motor. It’ll be EV.
In the 3 years they owned Norton, they haven’t done anything. If they are, it’s most definitely EV related.

Let us not forget, Norton themselves have basically said this. They actually said that their focus on EVs instead of ICE was THE reason for dropping the entire and extremely popular Atlas range…
But, let's also not forget that Dr Bob (HWDNS) he who does not smile, stated afterwards that Norton would introduce new twin designs next year. Also, he stated that the "Commando" name would probably appear in some later form.:)

All very ominous, no?

Ominous? No.

Incoherent? Absolutely, as I’ve argued before.

yeah twins that are already available. Commando SP and cafe racer.

Or Atlas EV twins.
The Atlas Nomad and the Atlas Scrambler.

Actually, when I ordered a Superlight it was intended as a track day tool.

So, a reasonably priced EV Superlight might just work for me 🤔

I‘d be the greenest, virtue signalling, Greta loving, guy in the paddock 🤗

There I’d be with my planet saving EV… transported there and back in a diesel van… and charged up with a fuck off petrol generator 🫣

No need for a generator.
Just unfurl a few hundred square feet of solar panels from a second van.
They can serve as a canopy, and power gen (unless it's cloudy.)

Honestly, for a track bike, a EV isn’t a bad idea.
Cheaper to maintain.
They can’t kick you off the track for loud exhaust.
Instant torque.
Bike balance doesn’t change like a ICE bike as fuel is being burnt.

I whole heartily wanted Norton to push with the 961's....sell shit loads of them, please do....its only a good thing for me long term. But unfortunately apart from letting down the Rupee counters in India...the motorcycling public....themselves and everyone associated with them....they also let me down too. C-minus for effort and execution.

I think we all wanted it to survive. More so than TVS. After all, in the beginning they didn’t want to offer it.

Exactly !

Like I said, if reasonably priced and light, it might pique my interest.

I think there’ll be time in the future to give them your money FE.

If there is a ‘perception‘ that the Birmingham 961 has the same flaws as the Donington bikes, I think that may be disabused over time - with some medium/long term testing, if not in the interim (IMO). Notwithstanding ‘that bike’, other reports seem to be pretty positive.

I seem to remember most of us had issues ‘right off the bat‘ did’nt we, until certain tasks were complete - for me it was ECU change under warranty, pipes opened up to let the thing breath, sensors changed etc. Only time will tell of course - the warranty period is time enough you would hope.

Seem to remember saying I’d eat my hat if they did’nt adopt the Atlas! But we‘ve discussed at length why further Donington models were likely not adopted. I guess criticism has also been levelled that they have only brought Donington bikes to the market and none of their own. Don’t suppose we can have it both ways.

The next model lineup is key and no doubt Norton has a plan, although the fact that we don’t know it is frustrating at best. You’d have to hope that as soon as they resolve the lineup they would start to release promo information. The possible approach that silence might build expectation, rather that frustration, would seem a little flawed.
500 miles.......... 🏁
