What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Stripped front end and knocked out a very rusty lower steering bearing before darkness set in . Tomorrow the top one goes out . To be replaced by 620SRS bearings . Had to abandon my work mid day because a Russian neighbour in this complex decided to drink on the street , yell about in Russian , then become a pain with the neighbours to the point where 2 took him down on the sidewalk . Right in front of my bike-work . I called up 211 and then 911 after the take-down . Cops and medics took him away , yelling in Russian . Back to steering head bearings tomorrow , I hope .
That sounds like an interesting afternoon!
Mike

I didn't do this to my bike...but...my Granddaughter and Grandson talked me into buying the skeleton a few days ago for Halloween. Sunday evening I was returning home from a sporting clays shoot, opened the garage door to put my shooting gear back in the safe and this is what I found.
Looks like the skeleton got delivered.

Taking care of a lot of little things on the Monoshock Prototype 850 today...

Installed the correct longer top banjo bolt for the braided stainless oil lines to the rockers.

What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Installed a chain guard after fabricating one bracket by sharing the hardware for the left side Pit Bull bolt; (still need to come up with one more). Also took the opportunity to space the Pit Bull "arms" about an inch higher to get the rear tire completely off the ground.

Installed the custom braided stainless rear brake line, then had to overhaul the master cylinder. Still need to bleed the system, but ran out of DOT4 fluid.

Did a bit of touchup painting after de-greasing and washing the bike.

Just over 3 weeks to go, cutting it close...

Hey G.P. I think those muffler mount rubbers are starting to fail ?

No doubt you already know
But if you drill the head and the end of the rocker spindles you can do away with that crossover oil feed pipe

Bit of a shimmy / light wobble at medium speeds . Suspect because Acadian and myself rebuilt both fork tubes with all new components earlier this summer . Light wobble remained , so put on a new tire , no difference . Wheel bearings good , so packed / greased them with fresh grease . Nothing left to question/ replace except the main steering bearings . Banged them out with a long drift to find the lower bearing full of rust and dried grease . The top one was fine . Both are sealed type bearings . Used my big 1 1/2 " socket to tap in the 2 new bearings today . The perfect tool for the job . Darkness sets in and cold . Tomorrow is another day .
Curious about an update.

You’ll see a few posts up I did mine.
I had pressure gauge at the left exhaust for a bit.
Had instant oil pressure at Kick start.
Took the cobbled up gauge off.
We’ll see about the longevity.
Kenny Dreer used to do it to his 880’s.

Curious about an update.
All quiet around here . The Russian was taken away by cops / paramedics for mental health reasons .
So I could continue my bike work on the street in 13 C. weather .
My neighbor Afo , who works on bicycles and e-bikes , helped to lift both the fork tube assemblies up into place and I screwed in the steering stem nut with retaining washer . Then he helped again , lifting , as I could not fit the front wheel into place and push in the axle at the same time .
He's a strong guy and knows what he's doing , as he works bicycles for people all the time .
Since it was down for major front end work , I upped the ante and fitted 2 D-Port sleeves from Jim Schmidt to the exhausts . Enjoy .

Bike finished with new steering head bearings , then a buddy called to say we have to drive 640 KMS . to pick up /return home the sale of a 1974 MGB sports car . His place back by 2 A.M. Spent yesterday on his boat on L. Ontario in dreadful sudden waves afterwards . Tired of driving but took the MK 111 around the block or 2 to check out the new steering head bearings , and all slight wobble was gone . Enjoy .

Cold out now , drove the bike but several electrical cut outs occurred so turned around and went home . Cleaned up fuse connections with dielectric grease , tightened up battery . Seems good now but will test again tomorrow .

If that fixes it then great, but…

You’ve just had the front end out…

I’d be checking for disturbed connectors in the areas related to front end work.

I was going to go out to the garage and do some fiddling....hard to find the garage much less go for a ride!

Grand Paul,
Is your PitBull lift comfortable to use for a one person operation.Does the arm go to the back or toward you to get the bike up? I have always liked the way they work.
Thanks,Mike
