What did you do to your Norton today?

Today I installed my CRG LS 3.2 mirrors and bar end adapters. These things are awesome. Love the quality and finish.
I then installed Richards transmission vent. According to his instructions it says to remove the gas tank, I did not remove the tank. I just removed the seat, put protective tape on all the surrounding areas and micro fiber towels to prevent scratches and loosened the intake box, throttle body to intake box clamps and lowered the air box as far down as it would go. It was really easy to do.
Once I finished the transmission vent install I then spent some time diagnosing the neutral "N" light that is intermittent as I'm riding. I did a wiggle and tug test on all wires and could not duplicate it at all. What I did do though is every single electrical connector their is on the bike I packed with dielectric grease. Surprisingly they all had some in them but I added more. I also removed the ground wire that held the air box on and coated that with dielectric grease. I took it for a 2 mile ride and so far so good. No "N" light while riding "yet". It's possible when I unplugged each and every plug that possibility they were not connected tight or maybe one of the connectors had a pin not pushed in tight. Who knows. But so far so good. I'll keep posted on this after I put more miles on the bike. Keeping my fingers tight.
Last but not least I wet toweled wash, clay bared, polished and waxed the whole bike. Took about 6 hours. I love black but it's a pain to keep dust free. The clay bar and polish removed all the micro fine haze and scratches. It looks amazing!
Scott.

Me and six others rode to finger lakes and all over niagara region today. 430miles round trip. 7am-7:30pm. Ps my dad and I were on Nortons. So I guess today i twisted the throttle and let it drink a lot of gas today. Thats what we did to our nortons today. Rode the snot out of 'em

Cheers.

Glad the manual made it easy to intall the vent. The tabk removed give more visability but I agree not necessary.

Today my Norton took me on a ride with 140 other bikers on the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride...
Raphael, Switzerland

After taking the day off and riding with no real destination I stopped for a coffee....

Today I patted my Norton as I walked away from her. :D

...then the arguments started with the Mrs. She was still on the back!

I went to Olivers Mount in Scarborough for the only Road Racing circuit on the mainland. Saw loads of stars including Agostini who was wandering around the crowd area. Some hard close racing and a selection of parade bikes. Then I broke down :(. Turned out to be a simple cam sensor failure. All sorted now.

Went two up on my 79 Bonnie Special with the wife, so I wiped down the Norton when I got home. :?

Hello GLB , Now that you mention the cam sensor breakdown ; Can you elaborate ? In other words what happens when the cam sensor starts to fail ? Does the engine just shut down ? I wondered what Norton are doing with that sensor anyhow . Is it for RPM monitoring and rev limiting for the ECU ?

If it helps anyone, CAM SENSOR and SPEED SENSOR are the same and interchangeable.

Today I detailed the heck out of my bike after my finger Lakes Ride Saturday. No pics but I assure you it looks good.

Hi The bike did not want to run evenly when I started it at the hotel. This is sometimes the case and I was not unduly concerned. By the time I rode to the circuit (only a few miles) I thought everything was fine. Just as I was parking it the bike cut out. It would turn over once as if it was going to start then stop. It was almost like it was being starved of fuel. The RAC attended and diagnosed the fault but no matter how much the tried he could not fix it roadside so I got relayed back to the factory. They fixed it immediately and I was on my way. If it wasn't me drinking their coffee and looking around I would have been out of there in an hour. The mechanic, Mark stated that this was only the second sensor he was aware of that had failed. But he did bring it to the attention of the design team whilst I was there. I have asked if the sensor is one in common use. Its position directly in line with the front wheel means it is subject to a lot of spray. As I live in England rain is not uncommon so I would like to put together an emergency kit of parts to get me home or that I can bodge to keep me going. The speed sensor to the rear of the cylinders appears to be identical but as it was under the starter it is not easy to remove and check. I did not have enough tools to do so and the RAC mechanic didn't really want to start stripping my bike. In short I had no real warning that the sensor was going to fail. It use however is critical for sending cam position to the ECU and without this input the ECU will not allow fuel flow.

That sounds like a part you should have for the road kit. If the speed senor (tranny) fails maybe the bike still runs but no speedo reading ? As small and light as that sensor is keeping one hand is a good idea . I had a similar experience with the tip over sensor behind the seat. It was just the connection that came off but the same thing , the bike just shuts down no fuel pressure. And I was down luckily very close to home Thanks for your feedback

Pulled the ECU out for a re-map. Great instructions, Richard! Actually did it yesterday.

Oh thanks man! Like to hear the reviews of them in actual use. Glad it helped.

Now if I would only get a response from MCC's service department. Getting tired of waiting. I could send it off to Wheelsport just as easily, wouldn't you think? Have you seen any 961s on the floor there?

Are you emailing them or calling ? I would call and ask for Bob in service 630-782-2010

I gave up e-mailing them. I called and asked for Bob, but he's pretty busy. Unfortunately, nobody else there knows what I'm talking about.

You try Gold Coast? They have a bike there, and if its sold, I could bring them mine. I don't mind a ride there to help a brother out.

Mighty generous of you, Britfan - thanks! Yes, I e-mailed Gold Coast and was about to call when Bob at MCC contacted me, finally. I mailed my ECU to him yesterday. I am still puzzled about which map I need and why Bob asked me which one I "preferred". I will call him after the package arrives and probe deeper.

First!!!!

Make sure you request the FULL name of the map you are getting (Entire File Name) on the invoice. This will come in handy one day. Ask TonyA. There is a revision coded into the file name so if in the near future you hear of a new and improved map, you will know if you already have it or not.

2nd and MOST IMPORTANT!!!!
Make sure you get the latest BIN file or OS. Hold them accountable by making them write it on the invoice. All dealers know what this is (at least they should)

FUEL MAPS
LEGAL ON ROAD FOR COMMANDO 076 (6500076_PR5_0116) which is for long quiet pipes.

FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY COMMANDO 077 (6500077_PR5_0116) which is for MOTAD Shortie (and possibly SBN) with or with out cats.

Some (many) have tried 091 with motad shorties but it does run a little RICH! again, off road use only gentlemen!! 091 has Easier starting tho. I heard. A little less HP according to TONYA's graphs. But truly; 077 with a file name ending in 16 is perfect. If you tried 077 in 2015 you will hate it and think 091 is better but I'll admit that 077 2016 once in a while it's a two button start >>>> but if you pull the plugs the color is perfect. So now you have all the info you need to proceed.

Let us know how you make out.
