That said, I wouldn't let one of these valves, ball or otherwise, within 100' of my bike. But that's just me.

It’s not just you.

It’s simply unsatisfactory engineering to put a valve in line. Do not be surprised the day the engine gets no oil.

On this you get no argument from me.

I do have a genuine question for those of you running the lever type ball valves - How much time do you allow between opening the valve and starting the bike after the machine's been sitting idle for a day or more?

If you decide to put one on and if you were planning to go for a ride I would turn it on the night before as I did when I put one on but that was only for a few weeks before I decided it wasn't a good idea, if you ride your Norton all the time then no need for one unless you have major problems with your oil pump.

I put one of these little buggers on the 750 . I picked it up from RGM . And i leave the 750 parked up at top dead .

It's, of course, up to you as to what you put on your bike. But I suggest you at least plumb that thing into the downward slope of the oil line going into the timing chest. The risks of that type of valve are compounded where you have it set up now ;)

The thing with those kinda valves is this, it solves a tiny problem of minor inconvenience on the one hand... and adds the risk of major catastrophic engine failure on the other...!

Minor inconvenience... or possible catastrophic failure...

Guess I’m just not a betting man !

Interlocked valves with some kind of fail safe device are safer, but personally I just put up with the minor inconvenience.

Since I have an oil pressure gauge, I know head is getting full pressure within moments of start up and no difference is seen if I open my full bore oil tap with ign interrupt moments or hours beforehand.
Before fitting my DIY tap, oil sieve in tank would be fully exposed within weeks of bike sitting. Too risky to start like that so it meant a drain and refill necessary. What got me motivated to put in the tap was a blown in half crank seal in primary after a weeks long sit up and start. Tap and interrupt are working perfectly. No more fussing.
