You want to believe the BMW engineers weren't inspired by the pecky bird thing above, but the similarity is undeniable.
I also see something of the Captain Everton head/dead German sailor body Cyborg creation from the movie "Virus".

I have to say though, the damn contraption rides down the road and does it's job very well, much better than it looks!

Nice ride report Glen, please keep 'em coming.

I was beginning to wonder why you were quiet lately.

One hypothesis was that you were so underwhelmed by your purchase that you were embarrassed to talk to us and confess how you'd been duped into buying such a lemon...

Another one was that you were too busy out there enjoying yourself on your new prized steed to waste time typing to us...

I guess at least we now know it is the latter!

BTW... Does the fairing require lower clip ons, or does it fit with the stock raised ones?

The full "Track Racer" kit comes with lower clip-ons but it seems they aren't necessary. I was able to order just the fairing and it's mounting apparatus rather than the whole kit, which also includes a rear fender eliminator kit.
At least one owner has fitted the fairing and retained the stock swan necked clipons, so it should work. The riding position is very good for me as is, but I wouldn't do well with full clip-ons.

Every damn ADV bike has a beak now. One of the worst styling trends since the Japanese started trying to out-ugly each others' exhaust cans.

I went to my local dealers today getting parts for the Honda as soon as I pulled up a friend who works there came over for a chat, said how nice my Thruxton sounded when I went around the corner to come in to their yard, we were chatting for a while as Kim owns a 74 Commando in boxes which I might be rebuilding for him, anyway while he was talking on the phone I looked over in front of me was a new Thruxton R, my first look at one in the flesh, a red one, the demo bike, when my mate came over I was telling how much I like them but when he told me the price I nearly fell over ($22,500 on the road), they had 2 more inside, one sold and another waiting to be brought.
Well $22K is way out of my budget so looks like I will be riding my 2013 Thruxton for a few more year now, plus I like the sound of my Thuxton with the 360 swing of the crank, has that thump about it from the mufflers and the new ones seem to be missing that thump, but the new Rs look great, I was offered a ride on it but if I do I would want one even more and my old Thruxton is getting me into enough troubles with 2 recent speeding tickets, I do have the money for one but being a self funded retirey that money is put away for a rainy day (bugger them rainy days, takes the fun out of life) plus the wife wouldn't be happy if I brought another new bike without her knowing about it till I needed a lift to pick it up ( what happen when I got my new Thruxton just over 3 years ago), well just got to keep putting them lotto tickets in.

Ashley

I know the feeling Ashley. The first thing my wife knew of my Duc was when the transporter showed up. After she got over the shock she's been fine with it though.

I think my wife might be a little jealous of this bike. It's the first time ever I've heard any grumbling about the motorcycles and it started when I brought the R home. I just don't get it.
Meantime, I bought some lingerie, or I should say luggage for the R. This is so that the R & I can go away together on lost weekends as often as possible.

And here is a typical BC mountain road- the kind that this bike really shines on. I rode this highway on the R last week but there are plenty more like it.

Beautiful scenery.
Nice twisty roads, with stiff penalties for mistakes.
Like the Hawk's Nest in New York State.

I've been riding the wheels off this bike because it's such a joy to handle. My excuse is that I need to put lots of miles on during the warranty period to find all of the faults we were warned about. Many experts on the Triumph site predicted dire consequences for those purchasing a first year model.
So far nothing, not a smear of oil anywhere, a hiccup in fueling, or any other issue.
A friend and I did a 400 mile day on the Cascades Loop recently. A larger group of us are going to do the same again but make it a 3 day run, maybe 1400 miles or so.
Got the fairing kit the other day, might install it before the next run.
Looks to be an all day job, there are 96 parts in the kit and 32 pages of instructions. The shape is perfect.

And STILL no pictures of the fairing in situ. You're slacking Glen!

Nice to see the 'affair' is still hot though!

Hi Glenn

I think the lingerie (luggage boxes) has spoiled the naked look of the R but I do understand you do need them when traveling long trips away from home are they easy to remove when not needed.

Ashley

You're quite right Ashley, luggage never looks great on a sporty bike. The panniers Triumph has come up with for the R seem to suit it well enough though, I don't mind them on there. They bring freedom to travel just about anywhere and that looks good!

Nigel, I've been rebuilding 1800 lineal feet of fence here, all done now, will tackle the fairing today.

Glen

It's done. Something I will never be heard saying is "I think I"ll remove the Thruxton R fairing for awhile"
It's a big job as expected. The instructions are excellent as is the quality of the parts.
It almost seems like it might be worth the price.

Here are some photos starting with the rear view and moving forward.

"Its a big job"...

That means a lot from a bloke who built his own Egli style Vincent hot rod from scratch!

Looks good though Glen, the silver Rs also look good with the fairing (albeit a little too similar to the Ducati Paul Smart rep perhaps).

Jack Lilley have a green Thrux on eBay with fairing, not sure why, but this didn't look quite as good to my eye at least:

What's it like riding with the fairing Glen, much difference?

Nigel, with the fairng in place as compared to without , in my normal comfortable riding position, there is very little wind on the body below the chest and possibly a bit more on the upper chest.
I've left the stock swan neck clipons in place as I'm quite sure that the low bars from the kit won't be comfortable for long distances.
Extra wind on the upper chest is a good thing for me, it keeps weight off the wrists.
If one wants to totally tuck in behind the fairing and windscreen for a short blast of a few miles or so, it's not a problem, just not very comfortable for long.
