hey guys - finally have my frankenstein-esque pile of parts together and wired up even...albeit somewhat 'custom' if you will.....

have the boyer bransden kit with the battery eliminator box...

set the timing via checking for TDC in the right piston via the straw trick, then retarded it 38 degrees which then lined up the scratch mark on the alternator with the 38 degree mark on the timing plate, then installed the stator and lined up the plate over the marking thusly...much like this guy: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPKoZpWAuqQ)....wired the power box and ignition unit just as boyer instructed with the ground being negative....getting spark and gas - but its back firing out the carbs...one or two pops per kick...everything is hooked up right....i think....checked and double checked - wondering if anyone has any tips?

anyway to confirm statically (with a light or something) that the timing is right without it running? if i hooked a battery up to the coil, is there a way of checking it with a light? first electronic ignition.....

Hi
I thought it was less than 38 degrees for the Norton? check your instructions!
Just checked.
It is 31 degrees standard on the Norton. 28 degrees with a Pazon. check your instructions for the boyer.

The fully advanced Boyer setting should be 31 degrees BTDC for a Commando. (38 deg. BTDC - Triumph)

Did you set it exactly as demonstrated in the video using the clockwise timing hole?

If so, then the timing will be wrong as the Boyer rotor must be set to the counterclockwise timing hole for a Commando.

isn't it positive earth ?

Well, he did say in a previous post that he was considering wiring it negative earth/ground.

oh man - such helpful info....will be testing all these measures out first thing....

re comments -

you can do neg or pos ground with the setup...just a matter of which wires you use....

re instructions - wish i had some.....

will let you know.....
