I was ready to buy a side stand for my 71. I still have the lug for the stand but dont see the bracket on the frame for the spring. Am I missing something? Eh, like the bracket?
Looks like it goes on the left side forward of the lug. Is that correct? Anyone got photos?
Thanks.

The spring hooks into a hole in the frame cross-member.

Late type spring attachment (earlier type could be different).

Side stand

The picture LAB shows either the modification for 1971 frame or '72 onward. The '71 side stand bracket was unique to that year. It was inboard of the frame tube at the cross tube and had a pin that the side stand fit over then secured with a clip. These were a bit weak and the pin would break, necessitating a modification to the '72 design using a bolt and nut through the bracket hole and side stand hole secured with an aero nut.

it's worthwhile to weld a hardened washer around the spring hole in the crosstube, prevents the spring tension from tearing through the frame tube

I wasnt looking for a hole, I will now. The manual shows a tab welded to the frame. I guess if the lug broke off it would be a bad thing.
I am replacing the center stand and thought I might as well put the side stand back on as long as the lug is still there. I may have to think more about that. Really not into welding on the repair kit with the engine in place.
Thanks

Not likely the entire triangular original '71 bracket broke off....just the pin the side stand attaches to. By the way I'm talking about what the side stand connects not the spring attachment to the frame cross tube, just to be clear. Many '71 owners have modified the bracket to what you see in LAB's post.

I still have the lug that the side stands slides onto. It has the channel for the dinky snap ring on it which is a little scary.
My manual shows a triangular tab with a hole for the spring. That is what I am not seeing nor is there any indication that it was welded on to start with. Pretty sure it was never there. I will take a look for the hole in the frame tonight. Not sure I want to put that back on anyway. Too much cash into it now for the lug to snap off and drop it on the side.

At least you have stands! The works prototypes didn't have any at all and we had to find something to lean them against if we needed to get off. I suspect that the early production bikes, which used the same center stand as the Atlas, had grounding problems because the Commando frame had different dimensions to the Feather-bed frame of the Atlas. They were difficult to pull up onto the stand also.
