Side stand gap

I was going to suggest that you stop burning time and purchase a side stand kit; it has been some time since I purchased one...wow are they expensive! Building up the flat that limits the side stands travel, as previously suggested, sounds pretty good. The spacer/bushing that bolt secures come in 2 ODs, the pre-mk3 and the mk3, check the ID of your side stand if you need one, they are very inexpensive. If the hole in the side stand is hogged out...

Best.

This one? $12.

It would have had the weak 'pin' lug, originally. Either the pin would break or the circlip (and therefore the stand) would fall off!

I think he was referring to the side stand kit with the stand, spring, bushing and hardware.

So I had a welder weld on some flat mold steel. It’s a $5 fix and should hold up.

I also have a bushing on order. I’ll get the stand drilled out and have the bushing installed. Is it a press/interference fit?

Ella at Old Britts sold me a stand kit and it works perfectly on my 73 850 Commando. A little tricky to put on but it works well.

No, I was referring to the bushing that the side stand pivots on.

Side stand gap

The weldable lug you did reference shows a big difference between it and what the OP is dealing with, good point. As most members know the side stand has a hard rubber bumper that holds it off the frame and quiets the noise and abrasion. Also, if properly angled keeps the stand from interfering with the left silencer. I like the later stands owing to the extension that allows for easy deployment, which greatly aids in avoiding burns when I ride with my flip-flops...

I went through that too with the bushing. It made a huge difference.

I suspect your side stand already has a bushing in it, just may not be visible due to age. If it's seized in the stand then maybe you would need to drill it out.

The weld repair will work for a while. But the contact area is small and you will probably find it will wear, over-rotate, and the bike will sit at an unacceptable angle. Then you will need to weld the bracket and not the side stand, or a combination of both. That way you can change the angle of lean AND where the side stand sits when it is retracted.

And the mounting lug looks exactly like what is sold for the purpose of updating '71 frames. What others are not aware of unless they have a '71, The lug is also welded to a crossmember that is not visible in these photos. Plenty of strength if it's welded there and on frame loop that is visible in photo's. Those stands wear out long before the mounting lug, so just a consumable. You've bought some life for $5.

That is correct. The side stand doesn’t fully return to the frame. It catches a little bit. I was planning on grinding down the back of the lug so that the side stand returns. I’m assuming that the spring with hold it closed? If not, I can always use some strong magnets to hold it closed.
That magnet thing has crossed my mind also, I know there´s strong ones today but I wonder how do they cope with the vibration and shaking when driving? I don´t like that long spring....

Ya it’s welded right to the cross member. Looks very beefy. I would imagine the stand would go before the mounting lug gives way.

100% what I’m thinking as well. It’ll get me on the road for now. In the future, I may need to build things up and shape them for a better mating fit, but it’s fine for now.

The bushing arrived from walridge this week so I’ll get the side stand machined out so there’s a bit of clearance between the stand and the bushing. It’s a nice tight fit with the replacement bolt I got.

Just to be the wag. How's the center stand? '71 center stands were pretty poor. I upgraded to 850 center stand and never looked back. I prefer to kickstart with it up on center stand anyway.
Issues with left carb flooding on side stand and lack of faith of it being on side stand while kicking to start, etc. Maybe because I got used to not really having a side stand, I got used to always putting it on the center stand.

It never came with a center stand. I purchased a used one here on the forum and it was totally twisted and unusable. I’m feeling pretty burnt and funds are super tight right now so i currently don’t have anything other than the side stand.
