Rubber dampers

My dealer? They don't even sell Nortons anymore. I seriously doubt they are going to shelf parts. After the rocky start, they pretty much bailed. I've been getting very good parts service from the factory.

Yes I agree , Parts ordered from the Norton Factory have been great. If you get multiple items when you order then shipping is not bad. I ordered a Banjo-less rocker cover last month. I will be installing that soon. I will couple this with a cam chain and valve adjustment check.

Wow. I received the grommets already. The service is excellent. Still, it bothers me that my package weighs about .12kg and I'm paying postage on what says 1.5 kg. That and a plain rubber grommet shouldn't cost more than a buck each, not 30.00,. Freaking specialty items. Between the bikes and the boat, I'll be broke with a smile. Ok. Bitching session over. Time to get this fixed.

Just about every bike in the world has some kind of shock absorber system somewhere in the drive train. Many using similar to Norton. Many with far more power and torque than the Norton and many used far harder and less sympathetically than you guys do with your P and J.

So, I gotta ask the obvious:

So why is this happening?

And why haven't' Norton fixed it?

Maybe they have. My bikes 4 years old.

Fair point !

Anyone know ?

Until someone runs a set of the upgraded rubber dampers and uses them for more that 5000 miles we won't know. I say 5000 tongue in cheek , they should last 15,000 miles not K .. mine have 3778 miles and need to be changed. I will be installing what I think is a set of the upgraded dampers. The part number did not change and either did the color. Hopefully better composition and durometer ? . I think the dampers may be too narrow , only 10.5 mm wide ( I think they should be a inch or better deep ). This would be adequate for a super motard 450 but a 1000 cc twin ? But if a change in the rubbers composition and hardness is all that it takes to fix this that is ok with me.

I agree. Seems like this is a general design short coming on the 961.
Norton should have just borrowed the cush hub design from the Hinckley Bonneville.
It uses traditional cush drive rubbers and sprocket carrier design.
This works just fine on my 11 year old Bonnie twin.

I don't know. There isn't anything feeling very "space age" about the rubber. They're pretty pliable. Can't really compare them with beat up ones. The heat makes them a bit brittle. I had no indication of them wearing so I cant really say how many miles I got out of them. They pretty close to eating aluminum though. Worse than what Raphi posted. Is what it is.

Hi all,

I was changing tyres. And noticed that my rubbers are also quite done. Did anyone of you found an alternative?
Else I’m thinking to let them produced. I know a good company who might do this. Anyone interested?

Yes I would be interested to try out these you get manufactured . I assume you have the spoked rear hub ? TALON has the hardest rubber yet , TCDR-1 . These can be ordered from TALON . Right now TALON is not shipping due to COVID . In the USA these rubbers must be purchased from the TALON distributor . The harder rubber is more difficult to install , there is a thread on this already. BUT if you need them TALON had stock left and might make them again I read here.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for you reply. Good to know they can supply these. And yes, corona makes it all more difficult currently. For the tyres the also needed to check first on the supplies.
Meanwhile I also contacted also Ollie, he did a great job on revising my motor. It runs really good now without the mechanical noise what shouldn’t be in. He has these rubbers in stock, these are made by a supplier in Germany. So I think everyone white Cushing rubber problems is saved by him.
They will be shipped tomorrow so I’m on the road again next week

best regards

Wow! That caught my attention. Can you provide any details on what Ollie did to reduce the mechanical noise, for those of us too far away to visit him?

Hi Ken,

That’s a long list. Beside replacing the clutch basket, which wasn’t tightened at Norton. Most was done around the cilinders. The pistons had to much play, the pistons where replaced an a new nickelseal coating was applied in the cilinders to tune the play. The valve guiding, rocker arms bearing bushes were replaced due to too much play. And finally the oil pump. I might still have forgotten to mention something. I think the clutch basket created most of the noise.

I ordered a few sets of cush drive rubbers from DUBYA USA 6 weeks ago. I contacted them the other day. They are delayed due to the shutdown in the UK.

That’s bad luck. I checked, and parcels are still shipped around the world. So it must be locally in the UK. could try the alternative I mentioned in this threat. Mine came in within a week.

I just couldn't wait any longer to change my tires. The steel thread was starting to show. Good news is, the cush rubbers showed some where but nowhere near as much as my first set. I think I might get another set of tires out of them. A side note, the Dunlop Q3 is superior than the Brigdgestones in every way, shape and form. Leaning with confidence. I don't even feel the asphalt patches in the road. Mercedes compared to MG

Which Bridgestones did you have?
