Question about Brexit

Folks hating on 16yr old cause they afraid of what she say and what it may cost them ..... some call it fake news or don’t accept the climate crisis ....or both .....

I find it quite ironic that when these climate change meetings are held that people are jetted in from all over the world to attend.

Free speech Im fine with. Once mouth is open the foot can easily go in. After a while your open mouth gets ignored by most people.
It will be interesting to see where the young lady is in ten years. Most of us certainly dont want anything we did or said before about age
35 to be public knowledge!

The angry girl better not google plastic in the ocean.
I am watching the SBS documentary 'Drowning in Plastic, they have to be making this stuff up, are we really this retarded.

NO, we're that corrupt! I remember 30 or so years ago, the garbage barges were mandated to travel out some distance from NYC to DISCHARGE their contents into the open ocean. (which is an insanity in itself) Well, going out 200 miles, or whatever the required distance was at that time, costs the garbage company a lot of money in fuel costs. So these jackasses were going 12 miles out and dumping the garbage which began washing up on Jones beach regularly. An investigation and scandal ensued.

We're completely fucked if you ask me. We're all encouraged to buy efficient energy using items, bulbs, refrigerators, appliances, etc so as not to waste energy then I go to my mailbox and for the 200th time this year, "bed bath and beyond" has mailed me their 20 page color printed advertisement spam and I've never bought a single thing from them in my life... I save some of the planet's energy so some wasteful company can squander it away.

[/dismount soapbox]

I use the weekly batch of flyers to line bottom of green monster compost bin , keeps it relatively clean and bugs down , flyers arrive Tuesday night , green bin gets emptied Wednesday , a rare win win ..... the flyers and pop up adds on internet are two of my fave head bangers ..... back in mid 70’s I witnessed the garbage barges in NYC , literally blew me away when told destination .....

Reducing cO2 is a good starting point, and it ain't political, it's science. Better it be simple. Why is everyone so hung up on hating a 16 year old? It's sad.

Yeah, it's complex, so what? Is that a reason to do nothing?

I don’t hate the young lady - as an educator of young people for over 38 years I know the value a young mind can add to the debate that “adults” often overlook. The problem is that the pollution in the oceans mainly comes from 9 large rivers, 7 of which are in China, Asia etc and they ain’t listening - ditto for CO2 emissions. China has no intention of reducing coal mining or burning ..until we can get everyone working to the same goal we are fixing the leak by drilling holes to let the water out.

Sorry, wasn't referring directly to you, I'm aware of your history as an educator.
Generally just amused at the fuss this kid is kicking up amongst our "adult" leaders.

Good on you John ! for spending your work years teaching , my wife spent 40 yrs in the class room departing wisdom/life skills to her special needs students .... I admire all teachers for the dedication it takes to get every morning and stand in front of students ...

The problem I have with this whole topic is the knee jerk reactions and binary good / evil classifications that people make. And by people, I mean the person in the street AND the politicians.

Examples:

I worked with an offshore wind farm company. When we looked into things in a little detail, the amount of concrete used was tens of times more than the original assumptions. The lifespan of key (massive) components was around 1/5 of the assumptions, changing these components required a fleet of ‘platform ships’ that were not in the original assumptions. And finally the output was at least 30% below the original assumptions. Yet no one re ran the calculations on all of this which to most of us involved would most likely have shown them to be none viable. And they continue to be built, in their hundreds.

Where I live, the local council has replaced the street lamps with energy saving ones. Sounds fine huh? But they changed the whole posts, inc digging new holes, using new tarmac, etc.

Some time ago a police chief in the U.K. suggested people cut burglaries by leaving a light on when not in (could be a low energy bulb) and an environmentalist slated him saying saying that “children will drown in their beds because of him” ...

Greta sails the world on hitched rides on carbon fibre yachts. I get this because if she flew she’d be vilified by everyone. But whilst it’s fine for her, it’s not a model for global travel and commerce.

We need to find ways to reduce emissions whilst still allowing modern life to function. NO ONE is going to vote for the leader advocating a return to sail boats, horses and candle power across the board.

We need a far more measured and less hysterical approach. Yes we need to do things quickly, but not blindly and hysterically.

Hysteria is denying global warming.

At one time electrical lighting was much more expensive than kerosene lighting.

Both sides can be (and often are) equally hysterical.

Hysteria has nothing to do with being right or wrong...

I'm freezing, can't we breed more sheep for a woolly jumper, or will that natural fibre create more methane and bugger up the atmosphere even more. ??

We'll get Santa's elfs to knit you a jumper for Christmas mean time if you wait long enough one of 100 Bush fires raging across Australia might come and warm you up for Christmas, that you will get your Turkey ready cooked if not burnt - hang on, I thought it was summer time down under with the temperature in the 45s- get out of the fridge Acotrel! You do anything to get a cool night's sleep!

The whole thing is self-defeating. In Australia we have privatised the energy companies. Lack of maintenance means bushfires are more likely to occur because of power transmission lines. Now that our weather has become more extreme, there is more demand for electricity, both in summer and in winter. However the price of electricity has risen dramatically. But because we no longer manufacture hardware in Australia, little wealth is created - except in China where the environmental limits and labour conditions are lax.

What the heck is it that we are talking about?

I mean, just what WAS the definition of "global warming?"
And, now that that terminology has been abandoned, just what is meant by "climate change?"
Ought not the argument's rhetoric change from "warming" to "change" raise universal hackles of skepticism?
Isn't it just a "when did you stop beating your wife?" rhetorical trick?

Just how much of this problem - whatever it is - is actually, in fact, caused by humanity?
No one says, or knows, right?
And then, how much of it is actually subject to repair by humanity?
Again, no one knows or says, right?

And . . . . don't give me the "precautionary principle" argument because its a dodge.
It evades the questions asked and it also evades the oh so real questions of costs and benefits.
Furthermore, any one who argues it, should also apply it to all of the other problems we face.

Climate change is exactly as it sounds. Change in long term weather patterns over time due to natural and man-made causes.

Global warming is the measurable increase in average temperature over time due to human activities.

They are different terms, closely related and often used interchangeably.

Plenty of science available
