police Commandos and oil coolers?

A side note on the recirculating of bypassed oil already passed once through hot pump is if the extra heat added to entering oil is an issue. Would be a good time for someone to report the oil flow volumes at idle or 3500 or 7000.

Jim found factory pump couldn't keep up with the extra flow of drilled cam shaft so created a bigger pump to move more oil faster.

Does the factory pump put out not enough oil though ?
Has anyone explored how much goes out the PRV pressure relief pump,
and WHEN it goes out the PRV ??

Does Jims engine still have the conrod squirt holes ?

No conrod squirt holes. Carrillo rods.
A stock pump will never open the pressure relief valve when the oil is up to temperature. It generally only opens when the oil is cold.

The stock pump did not put out enough volume to keep up with the additional oil used by the cam oiler. After installing the cam oiler with a .015 in. pill in the line, the hot oil pressure at cruise would be around 5 psi.

After I built a new pump the pressure at cruise is around 45 psi. It gives me around 10 psi per 1000 rpm. The relief valve is shimmed for 65 psi hot but the pressure still goes over 120 when cold.
One morning a few years ago I started the bike after it sat out all night in below zero weather and it pegged the 200 psi gauge and exploded the oil filter. I worked on the pressure relief valve a bit after that to give it more flow. Jim

Bypass filter valves open by the pressure difference on either side of filter element and vary by filter from about 5 PSI to over 35. Some engines have built in bypass relifef for this reason. Bypass opening would not of prevented comnoz fitler exploding as his restriction was after the filter. Styles of filter bypasses http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ANmG5PXWMg

Hi Jim.
Refer: "...the pressure still goes over 120 when cold. One morning a few years ago I started the bike after it sat out all night in below zero weather and it pegged the 200 psi gauge and exploded the oil filter. I worked on the pressure relief valve a bit after that to give it more flow..."

If the pressure explodes the oil filter at 200 psi, at what pressure does the oil filter element internal safety valve open to dump its contents back into your oil system (prior to the can actually exploding)?
I am curious whether it is higher or or even lower than 120 psi?

As Hobot says, The filter bypass valve opens at low pressure but it just allows the oil to bypass the element.

The reason my filter exploded was the spring in the main relief valve was not strong enough -so to get a 65 psi relief on warm oil it had been shimmed to the point that the spring was coil bound before the relief ports were completely open.
Installing a stronger spring in the relief valve was the cure. Then I didn't need as many shims to get 65psi and the piston could travel far enough to completely uncover the ports on a cold start. Jim

Peel forgoes oil filter w any bypass. On hunting alternatives to box of fins cooler I came across reference that rubber hoses conduct heat out better than SS braid, which surprised me to learn. The more I learn on oil filtering the less I think about regular filters being work while but on initial break in. Yo'all know not to follow hobot reasoning by now. The way Peel oil system is done she may collapse frame by vacuum or over pressure blow the seams out. The mid frame down tubes are one sealed tube end to end that could be used for extra oil volume and long slow moving oil head cooler but would add more hoses and another fitting hassle so wrote that idea off.

Comnoz reverse pump plumbing makes good sense if -
1. you believe constant 100% all the time filtering is not that vital.
2. filter has type bypass that doesn't flush trapped stuff into engine.
3. your pump has about double the stock capacity so can push thick cold and cooled oil through filter before feeding engine and dual coollers.

Thats a big ask for a filter ?
Some automotive filters are made for that though. ?

PRV is in all Norton twin engines to cover that extreme pressure at cold startup....
