The Mk3 reverted to the previous 06-4837 chainguard (with extension holes) as the Mk3 has a rear disc brake, therefore, the slot wasn't required. The 06-4837 chainguard was introduced on the 850 Mk1 in mid-73 so wasn't Mk3 only.

Anyone considering upgrading their Mk I chain guard to the Mk II style see

Not that it matters, I haven't seen the slotted guard here in the 'States'.
My Early Mk2 certainly doesn't have it or the plugged plate.
Doesn't show on the Mk2 brochure, nor on the 2A JPN on the same brochure.
I some how wound up with a stash of 11 old brake plates from a retired dealer.
1 has the button holes.

When did it get intro'd?

It wouldn't be in the brochure as the slotted chainguard was introduced in January 1974 as stated in the Mk2/2A supplement which also lists the previous 064837 chainguard.

The reason for the fitting of the slotted chainguard and (brake plate with inspection holes) at that time appears to be due to an amendment of US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.122, effective from January 1974 that required ...a brake system to be installed "so the lining thickness of the drum brake shoes may be visually inspected, either directly or by use of a mirror without removing the drums...".

Roughly 10%. The invoicing doesn't show shipping costs as a separate cost. AN shows the order total as £98.14 and I vaguely recall Royal Mail being about £12 and DHL about £36.

Put an order in a couple of weeks ago and Meg said they sold off all the factory Norton parts and all the electrical stuff too. So I hope your right Dave and someone picks up the parts here.

Whilst we are proud to have been mothership to Old Brits, I take exception to being connected in any way to the other enterprise. That only bought items off us through third parties that are complicated and need engineering skills to make.

My apologies. I am unaware of AN's dealings with my local parts vendors. If it's any consolation I've probably spent 10 times as much at OB than the "other".

Are you referring to Phil Radford of Fair Spares America? I dealt with him for 20+ years. He was always excellent.

No, sorry, didn't mean Phil, I meant the European outfit now under a different name. Phil wasn't being supplied by us directly but I know he bought through another party from us, just up the road from him then- Rabers. I was there a few years ago and met both. Both were walking distance apart.

I am originally from Seattle and my 4/74 mk2 from there had it. Along with the brake plate inspection holes, shorter swingarm bushes and Welch plugs.

Curious if the cradle has the double back pins like the Mark 3, or was it the single top bolt, from stock?
 
We have exhausted OB stock now and I'm starting to put my '71 back together. The issue I'm seeing is what is left for parts vendors sell parts for multiple brands and just the popular items for Commandos. None had gearbox bushings for the shift plate, so off to AN. Put them in the cart and see VAT is added. Does that get removed during purchase for an order destined to the US?
