Or you could look at the setup Jim has, an inline automatic transmission filter, it is a much neater setup

Magnefine. That's what I use now. Simpler, neater, lighter, better.

Nigel,
I just bought some Magnefine filters from the US.
Still waiting for delivery.
Where do you position yours, is it in roughly the same place as the original filter, held with a cable tie or two ?

As mentioned, the Ducati filters are the same thread size as a Norton. Since I have a Duc and I had several filters on the shelf, I used one the last oil change on the Norton. It fits fine and seems to work as it should without issues. I use the K&N filters (KN153) and in addition to having a built in hex for wrenching it off they also have provisions for safety wire. No unfashionable hose clamp and clip required and it still provides security of attachment. And nothing says "I go fast" like a properly done and beautifully twisted safety wire attachment... probably good for an extra 5 MPH on a Commando and the perfect excuse to buy a safety wire pliers which is a very attractive tool. Now that's a Win-Win.

Sam,
I'm not at home to take a better pic, but if you zoom in on this you can see where I put it, its visible just in front of the z plates, its a tight fit, but it does fit.
BTW, I have some in stock, I can send you one if you're in a hurry.
Let me know.

Oil Filter kit installation

I am planning on installing the oil filter kit on my 1972 Norton Combat. It comes with a retaining clip and large hose clamp that goes around the oil filter. This hardware looks cheesy and will just trap grunge. I am thinking about relying on a well tightened oil filter to keep it from loosening. Have others ditched the retaining hardware?? Is this a reasonable approach???

regarding THE ABOVE. Mercedes, rOLLS Royce, BMW and all the other cars and trucks etc, have spin on oil filters. NONE use a stupid hose clip idea like above. Throw it away . Its a nuisance when removing the filter, and that's the best I can say about it.
