Years ago on the old Noc-L mailing list, somebody was selling a threaded sleeve that screwed over the standard Norton Commando oil filter thread boss.

This allowed the fitting of a common oil filter that could be purchased at the local automotive store.

Does anybody know the part number of the new filters that fit? Fram etc

Thanks

+1 on this link, as it lays out any number of filters available. I go with the Wix/NAPA 1352 as it's relatively inexpensive ($9.69 USD), the threads are the correct pitch (sse below) and, most importantly, the high-end Wix filters still use steel endplates on the filter, whereas everyone else has gone to cardboard! The filter also incorporates an anti-suckback flapper valve, which helps with wet-sumping issues. Check out NAPA's warrantly; I wonder what they'd think if you were to wheel in an exploded Norton...

That's the one I like too. Your auto store can get it, I get the WIX one. WIX 51352 (NAPA 1352)

If anybody has done the treaded boss conversion (thread now 3/4 x 16), the oil filter part numbers needed are

Fram PH3614

Purolator L10241

FleetGuard LF3335

AC Delco PF 53

WIX 51348

I'm still confused why anyone would use the threaded boss now that filters that fit the stock housing are so readily available?

They don't stock the filters, with the 16 mm thread, in any stores around here. They need to be ordered in and sometimes take several days to show up, usually for a premium price too. The last ones I bought were re-boxed ? brand with no identifying numbers. The 1348 napa filter(or equivelant brand) is available anywhere, even on Sunday.

I bought the threaded boss from CNW. The last NAPA 1352s I bought had to be ordered, and were over $10 a pop. So, that's one trip to NAPA to order and one to pick up. They want the money up front. At least mine did. I buy the Purolater Pure 1 filters at Advance for all of my bikes that need filters. You can usually pick them up for $4 on sale. The threaded boss is an easy way to simplify my oil changes. Easily undone if the next owner doesn't like it.

1. In 1989....I had talked to the WIX (supply NAPA) factory tech dept and sent them a norton filter to analyze. In the final result they would not make a recommendation for the norton.

caveat :
2. I would highly suspect that ANY manufacturer will not give any warranty at all unless the specific application is LISTED in their catalog. Even WIX tech dept would not authorize the use of their low bypass pressure 51352 filter on a NORTON though IMO it was technically the correct filter.

could please explain just how the oil filter has ANYTHING to do with wet sump issues. it is on the scavage side and discharges in to the tank above the oil level.

Its not a huge amount but the oil in the pipe can wet sump and the return pump side lose all its oil so its dry on startup and gear pumps are not good at sucking on air.
