  So who really cares if it makes smoke and is started on centre stand! FFS........ (As if he would care what the wannabees think) oh yeah that make 2 now... It is what it is.. I'd rather read Phil Yates' dribble that this mean spirited back biting crap..

Mean spirited back biting crap? Who's forcing you to read it? Simply putting forward my opinion that owners would tend to use their bikes more when they're assembled properly instead of e.g omitting oil seals and recommending clearances in hundredth's instead of thousandth's of an inch. This wannabe's off for the weekend - on my bike!

The need of valve seals or even gaskets in Norton engines is based on ones knowledge and conditions/materials/clearances of guides and/or pistons/valves/oil junctions. Ken Canaga reviewed smoking with factory iron guides w/o seals but raced smokeless with no seals on bronze alloy guides and close clearances. As for smoking in public or on tracks, I've been caught behind some nasty emitters and its definitely a hindrance following close before a pass, so a bit of a race trick I've seen laying choking smoke screen down on throttle ups. Most effective use of this tactic is the chicken gut trucks in twisting steeps in summer full of putrid frothing liquids that comes out as a mist that coats ya in the long lingering order, so they don't need a sign or extra power to > Stay Back 500 Feet. These gut trucks also have a 007 racer trick, spilling fats and oils out at highest braking points and apexes on Mt. roads.

Phil and Carbonfiber say good riddance to forum so I'm on the hunt for another to deflect flames from me.

I cannot see the point of this thread - what does it achieve ? The bike was smoky - SO ? ? In Australia for the last three years we've had politicians desperately seeking to find any little thing to be negative about - all it does is destroy the prevailing happy mindset and replace it with a nasty self-serving one. For me owning my Commando is about having fun. I really would not care if Keith Heckles started the proddy racer and it spread itself all over the ground - I would give it a round of applause.
As far as Phil is concerned, he and a couple of others are an indication to me, not to bother reading the thread.

No matter who the man is , an engine smoking so badly is a disgrace , and personally I would be ashamed to demonstrate it in public .
And a Commando should be started on its wheels ..

When you get to that age I want to see you start it off the center stand. :?

I agree with the posts regarding the smoke from a 4 stroke aint good, and 100% members here would not go out on the road if the bike smoked that bad,i for one would not. Saying all that the video from stafford of the bike ,could have sumped and proberly did.
These owners tend to turn up once in a blue moon, fire the bikes up and 5 mins later its back in the van...i would like a £ from all in the crowd that thought "OMG" !
The old guy enjoyed his 5 minutes and fair play to him, proberly his last performance. from what i have read..it was his last..God bless the man.
What happened to the late gents bike is anyones guess..but i feel sure it will be put right one day.

Hahaha Funny bloke you are.. Wont be long before another comes along to "upset the chook house" Meanwhile keep ya powder dry. 15k+ plus posts, you gotta expect a bit of fire....

There's nothing wrong with that bike. He's obviously old school and runs a little bean oil in there.
No big whoop.
