NVT stamping Eng. No prefix ? -Norton Villiers Triumph, The merged company was created in 1973.
Try following this .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_Villiers_Triumph

Peculiar stampings . I think the 72 cases still had the magneto blanking plate , which was deleted for 73 . So the stamping could be legit .

Likely 750 cases as The BARREL is the Dunstall 810 job. ( Wether Mk 1 or Mk 2 the Dunstal types will have to say , though likely the improved one , that late .

Porting , ?? mumble . the visable ( looks like a radiator hose fitting , complete with internal gook ) Looks like someones been ' port matching ' ,
useing a bit of bog to streamline the mateing faces intakes to head ?? Id loose it and fiddle the intake pon concentric & evaluate if Diameters match .

Rear shock gussets were changed , the inner was let back in a gusset to brace the seat loop for panniers , AROUND that time .

People say all changes were not concurrent , with Nortons , at times .

Not to Worry , Take your time and enjoy it . Get all the Tech Sheets , for set up .
CHECK what the VALVE CLEARANCES are set at NOW. Before you set a spanner on the Adjusters . if you would. Please . possiubly .012 ??

If its all to much ( dunno what to do with it - 650 SS ) , I have a few suggestions . 8) :!:

I have known about the woodgate site for years.

did I mention this bike spent its life as a privateer racebike from basically new? not surprised about any of the modifications. The p/o was in the middle of another rebuild for racing season when he passed away - that is why the bike is in pieces. His brother kept the bike inside his house for over 5 years before deciding to sell. When he sold I got everything - the paperwork, the photos, the race suit and helmets, the racing spares. for carbs alone there are at least 5 sets - 2 sets Amal Concentrics, 1 mukuni VM set, one mukuni flat slide set, and one big single carb setup. There are a second set of bare cases wrapped up in one of the boxes you see in the pics - I'll have to pull them out and look at the number.

paperwork says the bike was delivered as an unfaired 810 Mk2. Engine is at my father's place but I'll check valve clearance next time I am over there and report back. I should add that the trans is a 5 speed box.

The previous owner was a member of the Norton Owners Group in the 1980s. I have yet to figure out who to contact over there to see about getting his membership records.

May 71 , so thats about when NORVIL got underway . Some 72 P.R.s were 5 speed , maybe they got first choice on the ' New ' cases . ( No hole in magneto position .)
