New Triumph's

First weekend ride on my new Thruxton in 2018 Baldnob road over looking Glasshouse Mt, Captain Cook climbed it back in 1770 to find the entrance to Moreton Bay for future reference.

Had a couple of Hinckley bikes, a 900 Trident bought new in 2000. A nice bike, and had the standard problems with HT coils and ignition pick up coil. Very thirsty, was lucky to get 35mpg out of the thing. It died in a blaze of when it bust its camchain at 75000m. No indication of a problem, just a bang and graunching noises.

Subsequently bought a '06 carbed Scrambler, a cool bike. Got 83000 on it now, its looking grubby but going nicely.
I had a buddy that had his go bang in just such a fashion.

I almost bought a Trophy. It was a fantastic bike but it was showing signs of a bad starter sprag. Since it buried up in the engine I passed.

I think Triumph made the sprag more durable and easier to change around 2002?
Prior to that it was sometimes cheaper to find a low miles engine to switch in rather than pay a shop to replace the sprag.
For long sprag life it's important to avoid trying to start the engine with a lowish battery. There is a warning about this in the manual for the 05 Daytona 955i.

The sprag on the earlier engines, up to sometime in '93 was easy to change. Carbs off, clutch off, remove the lid on top of the crancase & remove sprag. Easy peasy. On the later bikes Triumph changed the crankcase design in order to save a bit of weight, & due to this stupid change the cases have to be split in order to change the sprag. On my '91 bike it took about three hours if I remember, but on my brothers '94 Trident sprint it took a full day, & that engine is bloody heavy.

I hope I don’t have to do that. I think they have a factory warranty for 2 years…

I had always thought the earlier ones (cosworth built maybe?) Had the hatch making it easier to change the sprag ?
But I may have dreamt all that

No you wont have this problem . It was fixed in 02. If the sprag ever goes on my 05 I can change it without splitting the cases. Gareth Davies did a complete redesign of the triple in 02.
That was one of the reasons I bought a post 02 Daytona 955i rather than the earlier t595 type. The other reasons were +20 hp and -22 lbs. Also better shifting and quite a few other improvements on what was already a very good engine.

The Thruxton 1200 has an easy start lawnmower style cam. The cam has moveable bits that hold the valves open just enough to bleed off some compression during starting. Once running , the force of rotation draws them in so you have full compression. This lightens the load on the sprag and allows for a smaller, lighter starter & battery.

I seem to remember that the later cases on these first generation triples were the Cosworth castings. Just look at the area under the carbs on the RH side to see the difference.

5 1/2 years with my Thruxton 1200 S and the orginial battery has just sh#t itself been getting down if sat for 3 weeks but always started with a battery charger connected and was fine once started for the day but do a oil change today and it dead the lights all good but the dreaded click click fired up on the charger so I could warm it up but after the oil change click click.
My daughter work at Autobarn car parts shop on Saturdays they sell bike batteries as well went there last week and you wouldn't believe she sold the one I needed about 1 hour before I got there so she ordered one for me pick it up tomorrow best to wait as I get family discount at less than 1/2 price worth the wait, I brought a new battery for my dirt bike last week from her it's a small battery that I share with the Norton $99 battery got it for $24 pretty good discount.
5 1/2 years wonder if I could claim warranty lol.
We have less than 2 weeks before winter starts and great day rides weather nice and cool with day temps of between 18c and 24c but cold if on a early morning start, love it.

Your late fall weather is very similar to our late spring weather here right now. We might be a couple of degrees warmer so it's not cold in the am right now, usually about 12 to 14 c.

I bought a Tiger 900 GT Aragon late last year and to be honest each time I ride it the more I like it. The build quality is great and I can do an all day run with only a sore arse at the end of it 👍

I rode a Bonneville America for several years, good bike. Now I'm on a Rocket Touring. I love the power and torque. It's the apex predator of the cruiser/touring market.
Could stand to lose a couple hundred pounds tho.

No better feeling, than watching a $45,000 flip-flop paint Screaming Chicken CVOFLHWGLGBT wobble in the mirror, trying in vain to even keep R3T in sight. 😜🤣💨
