I had a buddy that had his go bang in just such a fashion.Had a couple of Hinckley bikes, a 900 Trident bought new in 2000. A nice bike, and had the standard problems with HT coils and ignition pick up coil. Very thirsty, was lucky to get 35mpg out of the thing. It died in a blaze of when it bust its camchain at 75000m. No indication of a problem, just a bang and graunching noises.
Subsequently bought a '06 carbed Scrambler, a cool bike. Got 83000 on it now, its looking grubby but going nicely.
The sprag on the earlier engines, up to sometime in '93 was easy to change. Carbs off, clutch off, remove the lid on top of the crancase & remove sprag. Easy peasy. On the later bikes Triumph changed the crankcase design in order to save a bit of weight, & due to this stupid change the cases have to be split in order to change the sprag. On my '91 bike it took about three hours if I remember, but on my brothers '94 Trident sprint it took a full day, & that engine is bloody heavy.I had a buddy that had his go bang in just such a fashion.
I almost bought a Trophy. It was a fantastic bike but it was showing signs of a bad starter sprag. Since it buried up in the engine I passed.
I hope I don’t have to do that. I think they have a factory warranty for 2 years…The sprag on the earlier engines, up to sometime in '93 was easy to change. No you wont have this problem . It was fixed in 02. If the sprag ever goes on my 05 I can change it without splitting the cases. Gareth Davies did a complete redesign of the triple in 02.I hope I don’t have to do that. I think they have a factory warranty for 2 years…
I seem to remember that the later cases on these first generation triples were the Cosworth castings. Just look at the area under the carbs on the RH side to see the difference.I had always thought the earlier ones (cosworth built maybe?) Had the hatch making it easier to change the sprag ?
But I may have dreamt all that
and “new Triumphs “ is the correct heading!!Er...how about spelling Hinckley correctly?
"New Thaiumpths" would be even more correctand “new Triumphs “ is the correct heading!!
No better feeling, than watching a $45,000 flip-flop paint Screaming Chicken CVOFLHWGLGBT wobble in the mirror, trying in vain to even keep R3T in sight.I rode a Bonneville America for several years, good bike. Now I'm on a Rocket Touring. I love the power and torque. It's the apex predator of the cruiser/touring market.
Could stand to lose a couple hundred pounds tho.
