New Product for Tri-Spark users

No Wonder I went back to points years ago.A little maintainance once in awhile.The auto advance wearing was one of the largest problems.I found BMW high temp grease keeps it lubed for years.
As far as flogging Greg that is uncalled for. I know he puts every effort possible in his products and a lot of time with no thanks.I know full well after 25 years of carb rebores and other products that 95% of satisfied customers keep you going and the others you can never ever please.
Lets give Greg a round of applause for doing what he does best.CARING.

No, Ludwig is obsessed with weight on the bike, just adding a few thermocouples woud surely push his bike over 300 pounds and render it unrideable :wink:

I would say that "flogging" is a little bit of an exaggeration. All anyone is asking for is some sort of evidence or logic behind this product. Sure it's only a $6 part but folks have every right to question the thought behind why someone would take the time and expense to make and offer this. This is the internet, it's like the worlds most widespread knitting circle with all the associated gossip and lip flapping. :mrgreen:

Sorry dave for seeming so blunt. I do apologize for that.It just seems to me that anything electronic we add to our commandos has a failing curve we have to put up with.Eventually they seem to work reasonably well.I am sure the tri spark will overcome its inherent downfalls as the boyer did or is still trying to do.
It may seem I am still a flint and steel person at heart,but I tried a new boyer,coil,wiring harness and battery one winter.Worked great for 1 or 200 miles and the gremlins appeared. Since I had a rally 400 miles away to go to the next week I went out to the garage and shitcanned the whole thing.I put it back to original and all has been well for 8 years now. My wife came out and said what are you doing.I thought you put everything new in .Why don't you troubleshoot it. I said I tried but could not find the big bad ohm and give up.I feel my bike just rejected it and that was that.I would rather file points by the side of the road and have a beer than stare aimlessly at the black box.
I know friends who have boyers and have had no problems for 10 - 15 years. Good for them

I totally agree but I have always carried a spare Boyer unit when I had a Boyer fitted and did have the whole kit when the tri-spark was fitted.

Agreed - my only gripe with the Trispark is it's a tad pricey to be carrying a spare.
We still haven't established if there's an issue, but there y'go :roll:

For 'real' ignition drama try fitting a DMC to an early squarecase Duke...whilst writing the instructions as work progresses :?

As for carrying a spare, pack up the old points and auto-advance unit...

It's a good idea but none on their list is suitable of either type. The mean temp inside a running down the road motor is about 90F to 165F with spikes at idling at stop lights to 200F. Nor can I find a temperature sensitive tape to do this job. The old thermocouple type temp sensors with a thread at the base that could be jam nut secured to a cover are hard to find that will run a gage. Maybe a water temp gage but we have to do air and most of these just start to read at 160F or so. But keep thinking on it.

The heat issue with Tri-Spark was discussed on another forum (maybe BritBike) probably over a year ago. The insulating washer on the outer cover was suggested by Tri-spark posting on that forum.

The original Mk2 Boyers also had the electronics in the timing chest points cavity and timing would become very erratic when hot. The replacement one they sent me under warranty back in '75 or so was a Mk 1a which is pretty much the same as the Mk3 Boyers now. No heat problems since although I did re-pot the electronics module a couple years ago.

I'm still hanging back with a wait-and-see on the Tri-spark. Also the price....

How about probes used to measure computer component (ie CPU) temperatures?

Maybe some small temperature strips - The dots permanently change color when the temperature reaches a specified level.

We used to use something similar to these to see how hot our PC boards got when wave soldering.

This multimeter from Harbor Freight comes with a small temperature probe. Maybe it would work.

Not sure why we're all debating over a $6 part and good for Greg for offering something but for $6 plus postage it is a simple decision. Buy one or don't. The part is cheap enough to experiment with and if it works, that is fantastic. Hell, for that price I'll try one. Anything is better than a paper gasket I'd think and coupled with my finned cover, the temp could be lowered.

I've wasted more than $6 on a bad movie, on a crappy pint of beer and on a sub par quick lunch at a fast food joint. I'd rather put $6 into my bike.

Spending $6 isn't the issue at all. We are debating over expected results of a new product rather than wild experimenting.
Another cheap experiment: Gaining horsepower by adding half cup of sugar to 4 gallons of gas. Well Coco, only will cost you a dime :!: Let's give it a try.
