New owner - first 24hrs

I remember reading your thread on not reving whilst starting so it wasn't that. I could hear fuel in the tank but the fuel light came on after about 2 miles and then I filled up within 3 miles of that. When it started, it was very weak on tick over. I will find the battery flying lead over the weekend and give it a good charge. If the weather is ok, may give it a run out and hope for better results. When its running in a straight line its ok but slowing down and holding the clutch in for any longer that a quick gear change down and it conks out. I don't want to be bump starting at 60mph.

But on the ignition upgrade, surely new bikes don't need this do they, of so what do Norton say about that.

I neglected to ask the factory what procedure is for warranty issues, does anyone know if they come out to you or collect and re-deliver.
The factory were very clear about this when I asked them (I posted it in an earlier post somewhere).
They say that there is nothing to upgrade on the ign or any of the sensors on the new bikes, his words were “well you can change them if you want, but you’ll be changing them for exactly the same parts”.

Again this is what was confirmed to me that the coils supplied on all current bikes are Bosch parts

It makes no sense for any new vehicle to require immediate ignition replacement.
If the Norton requires this I would think it is the only new production vehicle in the world with this distinction?

LOL. Even though old, thats still funny.

Someone please take off a tank of a 2018 and take a picture of the bosch logo for me. It’s been my dream they come with a bosch coil and 8mm leads and iridium plugs. That would be fantastic news to me.

I supply the info for free and you can do what you want with it. I always encourage people to do their own tests and satisfy themselves.

That is a rather strange response Richard if I may say so. This was discussed a while back, and you yourself applauded the factory for ‘finally listening’.

Do you have any evidence for your suggestions? You seem to be in grave danger of challenging me for my title of Captain Cynical...!

Anyway, back to topic...

I note that the factory workshop manual stipulates CR9eb plugs, which are standard plugs and not iridium. So that’s definately one of your suggested upgrades they have not done. And definitely one upgrade mine will be getting as soon as it lands in my shed.

Re coils and leads, I can’t remove my tank for a pic, as it’s still on the bike at the factory. I suppose it’s a long shot, but can you zoom in and determine anything from the attached pic? New owner - first 24hrs

I will certainly be quite pissed off if the coil and all sensors are not genuine Bosch as they clearly stated that they definately were...

My purchased Bosch coil looks like this:

On your bike the logo is where the arrow points, but you would need to be looking at it from the front of the bike. to see it:

I did applaud..... Then was later disappointed.

I don’t want to bash or be negative so I wont. Do your due diligence and Share results. I realize plugs wont be but sensors and coil SHOULD be. Sensors are easy to post. Coil needs tank off. I sincerely hope they are Bosch. But the last engine that I seen was a dec 2017 and it did not have bosch sensors. My dad has two 2016’s in the shop now for an ignition upgrade, sensors and other things. Hence my disappointment. But, we’re used to it and its all super easy to replace so its part of the ownership experience. Now if we had to replace pistons on every bike that would be crazy. But thankfully we don’t.

Looking extremely forward to seeing a pic of that new bike with Bosch items. Next time you’re there ask to see the shelf with ALL bosch bits. Take a pic of that and post it. That will make everyone really happy. I’m sure Norton wont mind to prove it.

My bike ran fine without the upgraded ignition parts .....after months of other problems being sorted. However, it starts and runs better with the Bosch coils and 8mil wires. Didn't notice a huge difference with the iridium plugs. I ran the bike step at a time. Coils....wires....plugs.

Ok, now I understand your disappointment! And I am preparing to be disappointed myself when I get the bike and check fo Boschness!

That’s a good idea to check their shelves, but I have never been to the factory!

Boschness. Lol
Good term.

Don’t get me wrong. Norton makes an amazing product. And where they are falling down is super easy for owners to pick up. Like lack of dealerships. Well, they are one of the easiest bikes to work om and they are super reliable. Mostly everything you can get from other than Norton. Amazing handling and style cannot be beat. All quality parts other than a few sensors and coil and wires. It definitely wouldn’t stop me from recommending one to someone.

But it does upset me that Ive heard one thing and seen another. Oh well. You wont be disappointed with ownership that’s for sure. It’s strange how the thinhs that make us mad are also just as rewarding when we fix it ourselves. Like we gave a small part of making these bikes. I know that sounds crazy but you will see. And i will never sell my bike. And whenever I take a different bike out, working 10minutes I’m wanting my Norton back.

I hear you Richard, and I agree, I’m quite prepared to change out any non Bosch in persuit of 100% Boschness.

But if the factory have blatantly lied about this, that’s gonna take some getting over!

So I’m still hoping to find my bike bristling with Bosch branded components...!

If you didn't upgrade the ignition then thats part of the issue. Wrong fuel could be. And how you start it make a huge impact. don’t touch the throttle!! Or you screw up the sensor inputs. Check out my manual throttle control.
Not sure if this is correct but was told previous ECU used to calibrate throttle position so it was important not to touch throttle on startup but latest Omex don't work like this. Does this fit with your experience of the various ECUs?

You’re correct with SC ECU. It reads sensors at key on and starting. I’m not quite sure with OMEX. I just out of habit do not touch anything but the button. Before sensor upgrade and setting the starter contacts, it used to take 2 starts to stay running. All of last year, no matter the conditions, one hit of the button. I have SC ECU. 2014 bike.

Hi - any update/ resolution of your problems?

Regards Clive

Would you mind sending me a link to some of these please

I received my precious left hand thread Allen screws today. They arrived one day before the estimated delivery date, which is impressive, considering where they came from...

It’s crazy, but they’re from Hong Kong! I hope that’s not lowered the % of U.K. supplied status of my bike?!

Anyway, to those who wish to be rid of their unsightly stubs, he’s where I got mine:

The factory called and suggested it could be the Lambda Sensors after I started it and warmed it up for up to 5 mins. We agreed that it wouldn't harm the bike if I had a few more rides on it to see if it starts to run better. But the fault indicator would likely remain on. If after a few rides the bike behaves better, I will just do the 500 or is it 600 miles then take for a service, if not and it runs iffy, I will attempt to ride it to the factory where they will look at it for me. I did not press them to turn up and look at it at my place as I am happy to try to see if it will improve after a few more rides. I really hope it improves with a run or two.

For anyone who hasn't taken delivery yet of the 50th model, I had mine collected and delivered to me. It came with the short pipes, de-cat pipe which is a pain because now I will have to courier them back to the factory in order to get them fitted at the first service. Worth letting them know to hang on to them unless of course you are servicing the bike at a nearby dealer

That was the first thing I asked them to do.... hold on to the bits ready for first service, but it was explained that they don't have the facility to store 150 sets of 'anniversary' spare parts. I thought about sending my exhausts via courier ahead of it's service but then I'd have the additional prob of getting the original set back home.... so I shall just have to convince my missus to follow me down in the car, maybe treat her to a fancy lunch in Castle Donington :)
