New Old Belt Drive

The C3 Is the bearing internal clearances it has nothing to do with the "fit" slip or press. If you want a tighter fit to make sure you don't get race creap then you need a new part or some loctite 609 assemble with bearing cold and hub warm with 609 on the OD this will help keep the 609 from pushing off the OD.

Nice work!
That's what I thought but I thought someone else said elsewhere that it was also for the outside dimensions.

Update: I misread it and they were talking about the play in the bearing, not the outer dimensions.

Maney belt drive kit: 6.4lbs. Stock set up: 10.6lbs. Does not include plates or spring.
Dave, How much of that weight savings is due to the lighter clutch basket [aka chain wheel or in this case, belt wheel] ? Any weight savings/penelty with the CNW clutch center [aka hub]?

I have no idea. The front sprocket is definitely heavier than the front pulley. The @cNw hub did feel a little lighter. I didn't weigh the difference.

Any reduction in rotating mass is a good thing. I'm still on the fence about the belt drive thing for my personal use, but it looks great on your bike.

I like the screen plugs. It looks faster already.

You guys got me going with this thread so please indulge my curiosity.

Are belt drives on a Norton quieter than the chain?

Are vented cover plugs a necessity with a belt drive conversion as shown above?
Heat outlet or inner case breathing a consideration?
I know belt drives are very well established but I am curious about heat and belt wear and if that is a consideration on a conversion.
Are the screened plugs needed to vent belt "dust" or circulate cooler air to the belt or is this not ever a worry?

Also...with vented plugs...or without...how does the belt drive hold up in the rain or heavy water conditions?
It looks like the outer case would hold water if sealed...or is it purposely not sealed because lubricant is not required but drainage is?
I also think about with a big load of water interacting with the magneto......

Am I missing the point that screen plugs are intended for specific riding conditions?

IMHO they look great.

I know its a lot of questions but I have been thinking about a conversion and would like to hear from those who know.

Maybe this is not a fair comparison but another reason I am hesitant regarding belt drive is that I know, through experience, that a modern day belt driven SUV (like a Polaris Ranger) will most assuredly realize belt slippage when submersed or gets a bunch of water in the drive case under load. We got it out of the stream but it took some doing. It set me off enough to consider returning to a shaft driven vehicle.

Harley and mid-size BMW's use open belts for final drive, so I would not expect any issue with water. CNW states their belt drive is fine vented or non-vented.

Not sure how anyone could be on the fence. There zero advantage to a chain.

Don’t ride your Norton underwater and you’ll be fine.

Wow.
Where I live it can rain, heavily and quickly.
I was curious about some comprehensive insight.
Really helpful response, thanks.

Calm down. You’re overthinking it. Even in a downpour in which animals start lining up two by two very little water will get in the screened plugs. If you’re still worried then just run the stock plugs. I have never ever heard of anyone having issues with water in a dry primary.

Availability for a P11, and laziness. Norvil is the only place that claims to have one that fits a G15, P11 without a bunch of re-engineering. I haven't found any evidence of anyone installing the Norvil 069777 kit using search here and on the interweb, so on the fence. Piece of cake installing one for a Commando owner, not so much for my personal use.

I'm plenty calm, just not into attitude.
I made note of having slippage issues in a dry primary, read the inquiry
My questions were clear and valid. I made my limited experience with belt drive clear, if the questions are not to your liking...let it slide and maybe another will offer up some helpful info.

Yes, it was a cheeky but relevant response.

You said that when you submerged your Polaris the belt slipped. I suggested that’s not proper operating techniques for a Commando.

And then I followed up with my experiences with moisture and belt drives.

If you didn’t find that useful I’d suggest the issue isn’t me. If you’re that offended then feel free to start your own thread on belt drives. The are free to make. :)

Yes, I assumed you were referring to the validity of using a belt drive on a Commando. I’m sure you can understand my misunderstanding.

Quality suggestion....

And here I thought threads were to be shared.
Didn’t realize thread was specifically managed via your oversight.
Quality spirit amigo...enjoy your evening
