Maney 920 & TTI transplant

Serious quality kit this folks, well thought out, well designed, well made.

No miles on the belt yet to test if it can handle the 150+BHP that my motor no doubt produces... but as for the starter motor itself, wow, it spins up my 920cc’s and 10.9:1 CR as if it’s not got spark plugs in!

As seems the norm when it comes to Mr Rambo’s stuff, I well impressed...

Goodness.....very nice indeed Mister! ......so here's a question for ya .......Sort of apples and oranges I suppose but here it goes.....which do you prefer riding , your 920 or your 961 Sir?))

Hmmm, that’s actually a tricky question!

Apples and oranges is about right. They’re really quite different beasts.

I suspect the 920 is not far behind the 961 in terms of RWHP, it may even be ahead. Plus it’s in the region of 120-130lbs lighter.

So, the 920 is much lighter, much more flickable around back lanes. Plus it’s super narrow profile makes it easy to zip through traffic in town (the noise helps to move traffic out of the way too).

The 961 feels far more planted however. It also has more grunt. And has a super chassis and brakes way beyond mine, or the engines capabilities. Now it has Sport bars it’s also WAY more comfortable.

The fact the 920 now has (hopefully) a reliable and effective e start takes away one negative of riding it on the road (fear of stalling at the lights etc) and makes the choice even closer.

Currently, the 961 is the choice for longer runs, the 920 is the choice for hot rodding around on.

Nice dilemma to have though !

Sounds about like the dilemma between my 850 hotrod and Duc 848 Evo. Although the Nort is a bit more comfy.

It's a hard life ain't it? ;-)

It sounds likes a extended period of practical testing is required on each bike before concluding, as all respected research reports do, that more research is required.
In other words just go riding and enjoy the day, on either bike :)

One small detail-get some "920" stickers made to replace the "850" examples on the sidecovers. Work such as this needs to be touted and not hidden.

I like guys who buy a genuine Manx, then write 'Manx' on the tank in case somebody does not know what it is.

I get your drift Danno, but the current decals are lacquered over... and I can’t be arsed...

Maybe one day.

Al, imagine the inconvenience of turning up for a round of historic racing only to discover you’ve inadvertently brought your 2019 Panigale instead...

That’s why they write ‘Manx’ on the tank...

In reality I think people do it because they’re NOT actually Norton’s, they’re Molnar Manxes or Walmlsey Manxes etc.
Like this piece of engineering art below (I’d swap my 920 for wanna these any day):

Rob McKeever's modern Manxes, as raced by Alex Mclean are repros while the older one ('34?) is an original. Their Aermacchi-powered Drixton is also a repro, according to Alex.

It’s pictures like the Molnar Manx that I posted that cause me trouble...

I might not be able to afford a new Molnar Manx, but what about a chassis set up exactly like that, with all the good bits on, and my 920 motor dropped in...

(Although I’d probably be wise putting a disc or two on the front... it’d stop better... and it’d stop Al posting a gazillion messages about the doom and gloom of drums...!

Be quiet... otherwise I’ll set my therapist and my bank manager on you... the missus will stay in reserve just in case you need finishing off...

A neighbour has built one from scratch.
Patrick Walker Worx engine in 16 gauge frame, Quaife box etc The picture enclosed was a "work in progress' one but it's now a runner (although NOT kickstartable).
He did have funds from a sale of a Norvin though!

In 1973, I had raced my 500xx Triton for a few years. A friend bought an Ex Ginger Molloy Manx in New Zealand for about $500. He rode it in one race in Australia and broke his collar bone into three pieces. He offered the bike to me for $1300. I rode it and it was beautiful, but I already had one bike which was totally out-classed by two-strokes. One of the local millionaires bought the manx and tarted it up. It went to Western Australia, then back to New Zealand for $40,000. It was a 1961 30M in good condition. There is one thing though - when I was a kid, I had four friends all racing manxes. They spent more on one piston than I earned in a month. A sodium-cooled exhaust valve was 15 pounds Stirling - that was my week's wages. It is like the TZ350G I bought - when they were being raced for real, everything cost $1000.
I suppose that somebody who was born after Y2K would not know what a Manx is.

Just re-read your thread Nigel, and the question I'd like to ask this time, is knowing what you know now, (kick starting difficulties leading to cNw electric starter) and having put some mile on the machine, do you still think that TTI's 6 speed gear box would be the way to go now? Cj
