With the new roller bearing I've been advised to shim the kickstarter.
What caused the change in dimensions that require this shimming?

As with the superblends, the inner race will float in the rollers. The ball bearings hold the shaft in place as long as the journals hold firm. The layshaft is then shimmed as the crank is when using a superblend(rollerbearing) in the gearbox.
