Check the first gear lay where the pawl engaged. Should have crisp edges. Shifter cam Detent springs get weak and plungers wear. Inexpensive. Located from below.

last night I eventually got time to investigate more.Of course i need help and have some question for you guys.I got the inner cover off which reveals the damage to the kickstarter shaft.Definitely needs replacing.Hope the whole assembly comes with the bush already fitted.

Whats the opinion on the 1st gear lay? Is it time for a new one?

There was noticeable scoring on the layshaft the way round.Take a look at the pic and judge if it needs replacing?

I also got to this guy while I was in there. Its the factory original By what Ive read here.

First gear lay is toast. It is advisable to also replace its mate(first gear main) but that depend on the condition of the gear faces.
Shaft is questionable. You can get a used one from Ella for $44. Make sure you talk with her about it to get a good one. http://www.oldbritts.com/alt_040025.html

Replace the bearing, of course. There are many bad stories of lay shaft bearings for Portugal.

From what is visible the second gear lay looks great. FWIW

Personally, the overall aspect may suggest a "rage" issue, possibly relating to ignition and/or carburetter malfunctions.

That appears to be identical to the "FAG 6203 AP" layshaft bearing I removed from my Commando's gearbox, although that bearing was not marked "PORTUGAL".

These parts are beginning to add up $$$ :(
Things arent looking too good on the E-start side either.
Here's both sides of the sprag. Its knackered isnt it?

Was yours still working?
Are you able to re-set those sprags which have tipped over?

It never worked since I've owned the bike. All the pieces are bound up it seems.Maybe if I needle it a little it will return to shape.

Gentleman,
what years were your bikes that you removed an OEM Portugal FAG bearing?
I'm keeping mental notes.
I would love to kinda ball park it when AN started mixing the Portugeese bearings into the parts bins.
Mine is due for a change over soon and I will report what I find deep in the cavarnese rear of the box :D
OOPPS: time to watch Hobots burnout video again!!!

Another acedemic question on the Portugeese bearings. If I went into my original front wheel bearing and they were Portugeese bearings, is it likely that my tranny bearings are Portugeese bearings? My bike is an early 73 850 Mk I.

Highly likely but I would not go by the wheel bearings alone as all 850's run the risk of being fitted with the FAG Portugese layshaft bearings. My 850 MK2a had one and it failed during a sat morning shopping trip.

= "7/75" MkIII serial 3341**
However, I have no idea if the bearing was the original one or not, somehow I doubt it?

Trying to curtail the shopping list.
Heres a pic of the 1st gear main.
I know the rule of thumb is change both gears together but it looks ok to me.
What do you guys think?

please fill me in guys'
With the new roller bearing I've been advised to shim the kickstarter.
What caused the change in dimensions that require this shimming?

I think the ball bearing like Mick supplies doesn't require the shims where the rollers do because the rollers don't hold the shaft in position, horizontally.

haha, don't know if you get this with the oldbritts, but the cnw kit includes a spacer to put behind the sprocket. Little extra insurance so it doesn't eat up your case.

I have a CNW kit in my Commando (and like it) but I don't remember any extra spacer. Don't see it described or depicted on CNW's website description of the kit either. ?
