Hi Guys,,

My MK 3 Roadster tank and side panels are now with my painter and I would like to have them done in the John Player colors .. I am assuming the colored stripes will need to be done buy hand, or is there some sort of a kit available ?.. Can anyone tell me the correct positioning of these on the tank and panels, I have studied many images of other bikes and some seem to be laid on further forward than others.. Would someone with a NOS or original tank be able to post close up images for me ..

Thanks ..

Cheers
Paul ...

This rijjinal near zero miles bike was on fleabay recently.
If that was my bike, I'd like to see the gold Norton logo slightly further forward.
You do see some variation in them, even in factory fresh bikes of the time.
Getting the stripes aligning to the horizontal is a big part of it... ?

Hi Rohan,,

Thanks for the image of the side covers.. Would you have one showing the fuel tank ? . Do you ever see the stripes horizontal from factory ?

Thanks for your help..

Thank you Peter that's brilliant, just what i was hoping to be able to see :D ..

This has been such an interesting topic perhaps others might like to share images of their original jpn paint sets and how the finished job turned out on and off the bike..

Cheers

That is just THE only paint job for a Roadster in my book, on phase 2 of my re-vamp next autumn, I'll definitely be going this route.
Just out of interest, has anyone ever done an Interstate in JPN colours?

I did mine a few years ago but not as nicely as the paintjob in the pics though. Just watch the stripe level against the lower tank edge. Lots of the original (and quite a few repro jobs) production tanks have a pronounced droop to the rear. I found if you keep the lines parallel when viewed side on they look odd viewed from standing position. They need a little bit of a droop to look correct due to the recessed area half way back. Mine were parallel but look like they slope up a little. Oddly (I probably am) I've just stripped mine for a green flake job

We've seen several slightly-off JPN schemed sidecovers, where the striping does not appear level on the bike while it's sitting on it's wheels.

Hi.
Here´s a Photo of my MK3 as I bought it. I´m pretty sure it wasn´t original paint. Petrol ruined the paint one day when I left the bike in the sun with a full tank.

I'm hoping to do MKIII tank and panels this spring. What I can do is go ahead and take the measurements etc. and photograph it all and then post them here.

The weather is supposed to be decent here tomorrow so I'll try and get them done then.

If anyone can get me a colour code available in the US for the white paint I'd appreciate it. My painter can match the red and the blue but not the white...

I was going to go with Ford Motor Co. "Wimbledon White" but if anyone has info that might be closer to the original I'd like to hear it.

Most seem to use Ford Diamond White, used on lots of European Fords since the 70's. Mind you there are a few Ford codes for the same colour!! 8, FB, FBP, W, ZA, ZAFA ZS, 691A,

Peter,
I've been admiring these pics of your tank since you posted them. It's tank porn!
Do you have any pics of the bike built with the tank on yet? I notice you put the stripes level with the bottom of the tank. This is exactly how I intend to do mine, but I know others disagree, as I think the factory did too!
And what white paint did you use? It looks mildly pearlescent in the pics, is that right?

HI Fast Eddie, yes the white has a couple of coats of toyota pearl effect over a brilliant white base coat, also a hint of metallic in the blue, the red is plain signal red, everyone who sees it likes it but it may not be everyones thing, i was lucky to have an original to copy because the striping is not parallel to the bottom of the tank it angles up from rear to front but looks level on the tank, here are a few photos of the bike built by Murray at Cyclecraft, cheers pete

Very nice Peter and interesting to see that the original tank is one of the 'seamless' Mk3s. I have one of those which was originally in this colour scheme and the asymmetry of the thing made it a real struggle to mask up for the new job (luckily I wasn't doing it, just watching...) The knee cut-outs varied by an inch between left and right.

Fred ans Peter,

Nice job and even better when you tackle it yourself. I did my 850 a couple of year ago and got some good advice off this forum on paint colours.
The white I used was Ford Diamond White, the Red was BMW Zanzabar and the blue Vauxall Atlantic blue. These colours came up in Glassurit in Sydney, so should be available most parts of the world?
I took Keiths advice on the tanks stripes at the bottom, and aligned them slightly drooping at the rear, somehow it harmonises with the lines of the tank. But even after masking tank and side panels on the bike, I still did not get them to all line up perfectly, maybe I could not stand back far enough in my garage. But it gives my mates something to bug me about, hehe!

nice job Peter

Cheers Richard
