I've done it on two Combats in good tune and i'm a skinny guy but pretty good arms.
I loved to start with a crowd no throttle - just suddenly idling in little pitter pats to the soul. This is normal Commando behavior, not necessarily common.

PS I may be wrong, but wild cams with lots of overlap will lower the compression...
 
Yes a long duration over lapped cam lowers low rpm CR. I'm counting on it.
Combat will detonate rather easy on standard cam. It should not take much to start Commandos just turning pass TDC should be enough.

Since the fuel injection and ignition system kickbacks are a thing of the past. Basically the first three sparks occure after TDC. I also have a very large sprocket on the motor to take some torque off the trans. That makes it a bit easier to push past TDC. One second after you turn the key on the injectors prime the motor with just the right amount of fuel for the temperature. It makes it really easy to start.

Are you at a stage yet of having an out of the box turn key FI system. I'm in two minds about an FI system on an old Norton, on the one hand it's fantastic to have a modern system continuely finding the sweet sport regarding fueling, on the other hand you have the 'charm' of the old Amals :mrgreen:

After thinking about it some more, I will call that a cheat, it has fuel injection, a non standard evolved ignition system and a cam with lots of overlap and I won't even mention the engine has been built by one if not the best Norton guru out there.

If anyone else can put up a video of a standard or near standard Commando (I will accept an Atlas too) being hand started by a normal human being (guys with arms bigger than my waist are OUT), I will concede it can be done.

PS Jim, a starter on the rear hump would work well on your bike seeing it is so easy to start.

I haven't checked it lately. But it uses around a quart of oil in 3000 miles and the starting has not changed in the last 20,000. Jim

Aha :!: the cat's out of the bag, after 20,000 miles, it is probably loose enough so a hamster on a threadmill could get it going :mrgreen:

It' been fuel injected for 20,000. I was at about 20,000 on the lower end before that. It is time to install the replacement that is in pieces on the bench. I've been saying that for two years. Just everyone elses job comes first. Jim
