Some food for thought there folks; many thanks to all for your input. I'll probably try a MotoBatt AGM battery - never heard of AGM technology before. It can't last less time than a cheapo 'Powerline' brand item!!

As someone has already mentioned, have you checked your charging system?
If the Zener diode is not doing its job properly, it may be supplying too many volts, causing the battery to boil.
I like to keep an eye on voltage, so I've installed a cheap, waterproof voltmeter next to my fuse box (non-standard):

When revving the engine, you don't want to see more than 14.5V.

I got one of these Motobatt items back in April, so far so good, it's sealed so no maintenance, no breather hose or leaks; and four terminals, which I've found handy ... That was the right battery for me, but they come in different sizes. Hope that helps, but I'd be just as interested to hear anyone else's experience with the same thing.

I was having some problems starting so removed a YUASA sealed unit & replaced with one of the above, the 4 posts are really useful; the YUASA had been in place for just over 2 years & is now my standby battery for 12V testing in the garage.
