How many Commandos here?

Two for me: a 1974 850 Interstate I restored a couple of years ago and a 2/3 complete '74 Roadster which I'm currently restoring for a friend.

Has anyone come up with a total. so far?

Paul

OK I'm in
1972 Commando #204839 Combat Candidate Close Cooling Fins between head and cylinders.
Whats the count so far?

I haven't gone back to count yet.

I figure there will still be people checking in for another week at least...

Surfdog

Very tidy example there !

I am intrigued that seemingly only a few that have the chain guard extension on their Commandos.

After I reportedly "ruined" a young nieces t -shirt when I took for her a spin as a pillion , I bought one.

I am really pleased with just how effective they are are ! No more grease or oil on the back of the bike or pillion. Even the rim deposits were reduced & vastly improved after installing this tweak!

( In fact I just bought a SS version to replace the fibre glass one I initially installed . The original one was recently damaged, after a bizarre incident in the work shop ! )

Add my bud Wes's '71, plus a few other C'do's we hear about but ain't seen i Arkansas.

Does anyone have a guesstimate of how many C'do's world wide? That are ridable plus those that are still mostly there? Seems I've heard 50,000 range of total production.

i currently owe ONE commando but did my share to uphold the english industry by ruining 2 850 commandos by parking them where they did not belong
also blew up a few engines in classic side-car races

another commando engine is being put in a featherbed at the moment , with isolastics , so that counts for another half

perhaps Jean and I can put those 2 halves together ?

WELCOME BACK LUDWIG

I currently have 4 750's and 1 850. I'm counting 2 basket cases I bought with only a bill of sale and no registration (and I'm talking boxes of parts).
My avatar bike is the only one that should run but it's been stored for 25 -30 years so i'll tear it down before starting it. My latest acquisition, a 72 yellow proddy styled bike was supposed to be a runner but with bad wet sumping issue. The more I looked at it the worse it got. I have to do mounts, swing arm spindle and tear the head off for sure and do some wiring before I have a runner. It will need new rubber too and I still have to solve the po's stated problem.

I had 2 750's and 1 850 in the 70's.

Why would anyone need more than one Commando? This one has served me well for 36 years:

I had to smile when I saw your license plate, Surfdog...when I was getting ready to register my bike years ago I went on the DMV website where you can check out plate names that are available and those already taken by others. I tried every combination of Norton, Norton using "zeros", Nrton, Nortn, etc., etc.....all taken. Sheesh! I settled on a name that I wan't really happy with...but oh well. However, when I was driving over to the DMV office I came up to a red light and there in front of me was a car with "Q's" on the plate. Eureka!! I immediately noticed you couldn't tell the difference between a "Q" and a "O" until you were right up close....the result....my NQRTQN plate became a reality!!!!

3500 members , 2000 page views [many repeats] 139 posts, first week.......Guessing 200-300 Bikes , 8% own a bike, So far? But its early days.

What website is this, pre tel?!

The DMV website is Florida's Department of Motor Vehicles...it has a search tool for plate names for those wanting a personalized license plate.

Well, let's see. One at least for the street, one for vintage racing, one for Bonneville landspeed racing, one to pull the sidecar, one for dirt track racing, maybe one rare model for shows, and certainly several for spare parts and later projects.

Oh, wait, was that a rhetorical question?

Aha..I found the one for the Kansas DMV as well.

DAMN IT, the tag I want isn't available. It's available in Florida, though. :(

Just one - 1974 850

I think if we are compiling a list, they should include only currently owned bikes. If previous bikes are counted and a member sells a bike to another member, it may be listed twice.

I maybe can't justify my "needs" as good as Ken has but I'd like an 850 interstate for long distance, a roadster for general running around, my blue Dunstall because it's family and I finally got my yellow proddy looking bike I used to drool on in the 70's. I may even some day make a Norton chopper just for some fun. But it's more than this. It's like adopting a child. When you see a Norton in your very own community that's been badly neglected and more often than not, it's likely been abused too, aren't you compelled to take it in. It's about being there for it when you know you can make a difference, turn it around, give it another chance. It's about those long lone nights in the garage nursing these broken spirits back to become the fiery thunderous steeds they were meant to be with just a little tlc from your part. It gives you a sense of fulfillment knowing you helped. I just wish the government would recognize them as dependents and we could get a kickback on our income tax for all the time and dedication we put in to this noble cause.

Rennie for President!

...oh, wait, you're from Canada.

Heck, that's okay; Rennie for President!

Yes saving all these little orphan children of the world. First Commando is usually just what fate dragged your way, but then as scope of Commandos soaks in you need one to do up as non-Norton as you like, then when the dead end guilt trip builds up, you should save one to serve the future as close as they were issued when king of the coop. Then some one needs to keep the flame going on the ultimate rebellous motorcycle expression of life being too short to matter what ya do in the end so tends to offend those who fear breaking rules that go on their permanent record, a righteous chopper. Just don't ever let out you dated a goat or a sheep on your Norton, not even once or the impression may stick from now on, ugh.

Take TC for instance, lost so many image points sporting a 16" Harley rear wheel as too chopper-ish to believe. I'll ask him if he cares.
