hello to everybody!

yesterday i arrived from my tour through croatia, slovenia, italy, southtyrol through the dolomites, tyrol, vorarlberg, germany and back to my hometown via salzburg.
was great! norton ran perfectly! no problems on the est. 2.500kms.....the only thing happened was that i lost my domed nut from my kickstart near trieste. funny thing! i had always do a flying start when i did a short coffee break....people had to thing that i am realy not sane! imagine: a men with a commando, full packed, is running towards the motorway.... then i gotr an idea to try to squeezed a M10 nut from my seatfixing on it - worked!

here are two pics from my journey....just did a few with my cellphone camera and these two are the only ones which are ok...

this is at the the island KRK in croatia.....the old Norton and the sea.....hey! these are my new mufflers.....alloycaped short megaphones.....i put the guts out.....works better....no back pressure!

...and this one is at the Limski-channel...
Hello to all of you! I am a new one in this forum!

a can highly recommend you to go through croatia someday......the surfaces of the streets are perfect and the curves are build for realy highspeed riding.

chris

Well done Chris At least your bike is being used not hidden or used as a poseurs -toy
I think that you should be careful without rear mudguard as that oil tank won,t be able to keep all those stones out of your carbs....I had an central alloy oiltank pieced by stones thrown from the rear tyre

I greatly admire you, Chris, for your beautiful bike AND your obvious mechanical ability to ensure a successful distance tour on it.

I second the notion concerning the high liklihood that your engine can ingest tire 'fling', possibly causing grave damage. At least some sort of simple deflector ahead of the rear tire...

You broke down less than I did with a little 50 mile loop! Good on ya.

hey! you are right i should put some kind of shield between my carbies and my rear tyre.....thinking about something i saw on a bike from a mate from vienna....
....just did a peep on his homepage, but the picture isn`t online anymore. i want to put a iron sheed on fixed between the rear frame tubes.
but although there isn`t the example picture anymore online that i was pointing at : take a look....it is a great site....and there is a fine gearing calculator in excel for download
http://www.gearhead-racing.com/

ad Ludwig: yes, in the austrian alps it can happen that it`s snowing in the summer. and most time no camping.... i slept in a hotel or private bed and breakfast....i didn`t find a place on my bike to do the sleeping bag on. but now i see at your picture where to do the sleeping bag on for the next trip.
When i arrived at nowhere and didn`t find a place for the night and i was to tired to search, i was sleeping outside with my leatherjacket on lying on my bathing towels. in summer in croatia the temperature allows this.

"...i was sleeping outside with my leatherjacket on lying on my bathing towels."

Now THAT is camping!

That sounds so damn exotic. It just doesn't have the same effect if I say that I just took a ride through Parkville, Missouri and then through Smithville, and then on to Kearney and Excelsior Springs.

Knowuddimean?

I know, but I was just making a point that it's funny how everyone takes for granted what they have in their own back yard. The other difference is, I've heard of everywhere he was, but I'm willing to bet the reverse isn't true. You just get a picture in your mind of what places look like.

A bunch of the Iron Butt guys do the border to border run; they can say "Canada, the Dakotas, Kansas, top to bottom through Texas, all the way to Mexico", and it sounds just as interesting to many Europeans.

Still, you can cross 8 COUNTRIES in Europe and not travel the distance you need to ride to get from the top to the bottom of the STATE of Texas!

It's over 800 miles to drive from Pensacola to Key West - not the most exciting drive.

From the same vantage point? just kidding

I have to agree, the roads in Europe are just wonderful, so smooth, just the ticket for bicycles. The roads you showed are for cyclists with better legs than mine, but I would love to ride them on a motorcycle, especially a nice Norton.

Jean

ANY DAY NOW, I'm going to be winning that big lottery, then I'll get to ride ALL those roads, and many more, on pristine, perfectly fettled Nortons, Triumphs, BSAs, Brough Superiors, and a few top-tier vintage Japanese bikes and MAYBE a 50s Harley.

When I get done, I'll decide which was best.

Of course we all know which roads are best:

THE ONES WE CAN RIDE ON ANYTIME WE WANT, CLOSE TO HOME!!!!

Again, Chris embodies the spirit of the true down-to-earth classic bike enthusiast; a hand-built special, having fun on the open roads and sleeping under the stars. Yes sir, living the life!

I have driven many miles in the US , and I may say Europe has the roads with the highest fun factor .

Try the Road to the Sun in Montana just outside of Whitefish. It looks just like the roads in your pictures. That Road to the Sun freaked me out a bit driving it in a car although I want to do it on my motorcycle next summer. Lots of crazy stuff up here in Canada throughout the Rocky Mountain range in Alberta and B.C.

Welcome,
I drive a 72 combat in yellow.
Born on dating June 72, is yours younger or older.
Nothing like a wide open run w/ a combat just to know you still got it.

mm.. I don't think so .That road goes trough some very beautifull scenery , but it is not very demanding .
The difference is that in Europe , people have been carving roads trough the mountains for thousands of years .
Originally donkey tacks , later adapted for modern traffic .
In the US , most roads are built with 18 wheelers in mind .
Of course there are some very exiting roads from the Apalachians to the high Sierras ( been there, done that ) , but they are few and far between .
The scenery is outstanding , but the roads themselves are generally pretty boring .

My first and only time on the Road to the Sun was last summer coming home from Whitefish. There was a ton of construction going on and gravel all over the roads so maybe I thought it was a bit more crazy than it actually was. I was driving so I could not look too much but I recall my girlfriend going mental as she really does not like heights.

Either way, anything is more exciting than the prairie roads I get here in Saskatchewan. The old saying is it's so flat here you can see your dog running away for 5 days.
