Hello from Norton UK

I searched for the original posting that announced Callum’s exit from Norton. In that post there was also a notice of change in official policy - that all future requests for parts would only be accepted from an authorized Norton dealer.

I can’t find the post, but it’s out there in a thread somewhere.

When I read that post initially, I knew this would be a huge problem. My dealer has been terrible at ordering parts for me. It took them 4 months to get me my oil-in-airbox kit. I’m still waiting on the little oil strained for the sump oil pickup. The one that came in the kit was damaged. I was hoping to do the clip-ons to handle bars swap this winter, but who knows how long it will take to get the replacement parts from my dealer.

I know that the attention of the factory boys is now focused on the introduction of the new V4 and 650 models, but they really need to be more mindful of 961 owners and their needs. The folks who actually purchased really Nortons, and help the factory pay the bills, and keep the lights on.

Hey all, just recently had an issue with my 961. I contacted Clem (I assume short for Clemence) in the Sales and Service area at Norton. He said my bike was eligible for an ‘recall mods’ which is the breather and the dipstick. He then listed my closest dealers who could help, in my case it happened to be the factory. So it made sense to get my bike to those guys.

He then transferred me across to Olivia Burnell who organised my recall and service.

I found the guys really helpful, informative and friendly. So if you have an issue I’d recommend (if practical) phoning the factory and asking to speak to either Clem or Olivia. It may be that the factory is too far to send your bike, but it’s worth speaking with them to perhaps prompt the spare parts to be sent to your local dealer.

Perhaps useful for someone? I know I’m lucky to live near the factory, so well aware it’s not that easy for everyone.

Oh and had another Norton ‘character building event’ today on the way into work. The rear brake bobbin dropped off/disappeared/unscrewed itself from the brake lever. Caused a medium level panic, nothing too serious.

So I phoned Olivia (at the factory), she was very apologetic, and she popped another one in the post this morning. So I’m hoping by tomorrow I should get another peg and screw through the post. In the mean-time I have ordered some Loctite 243 to seal the deal.

Perhaps this quick and effective response from the factory is a sign of things to come?

Gold Coast is no longer an authorized dealer. Actually, I was told by Callum and Kevin that they will no longer send my parts to them and to order directly, but then of course, that policy changed. So AF1 it is. They are great communicators. I've gotten advice and info from them via email. Only problem is, its still taking forever and a day to get my patch kit from the factory. I'll email them again today. The fuel light is dancing wildly.

... why is it so difficult to purchase parts lately?! Honestly, it makes me nervous. All I want is a corrected length oil dipstick ...

Quoting myself here and leaving out the rant. It's been closer to 7 weeks, but I got the attention of Norton UK as well as MCC. My dipstick is on it's way. I also got a recommendation from Kev about the breather mod kit - in my case the dipstick is probably more important since I'm not losing much oil through the airbox. In fact I have yet to see any trace of oil in the airbox beyond what drains out into the bottle. Hurray for me! :D

I'm still using the original and not really having a problem. You get it yet? I did inquire about getting one through AF1. He'll look into it.

I did just receive the extended dipstick rod. Jeez, for the cost I thought I would get the whole thing. I am happy to have it, nonetheless. I simply didn't trust my judgement with the original. With all the noise the engine makes at least now I can be comfortable about the oil level.

Hi everyone,
Just a quick post to introduce myself, and help explain my intentions here on Access Norton.

My name is Simon Marshall and I am one, of the small team, of Design Engineers here at the Norton Factory at Donington Hall, UK. I’ve been with the company since early 2012. There is a lot of positivity about the brand and the bikes here on the forum, which is great to see, but there is also some miss-information floating around. My intention here is to give an official factory response to some of the threads on the forum and help make sure the correct info is available to those who need it / want to listen to it.

Just a heads up however, I’m only able to help out with 961 Commando and Dominator models that have been built here at the UK factory since 2010, so please don’t ask me anything about sourcing parts for your 1955 Norton, I wouldn't even know where to start ! :D
ok lots o information there.

i've just recently had a closer look at new model nortons & at the very least, support & parts jumps out as highly problematic for a potential buyer,

why would that suddenly, or in any way be different with new post 961 models?

Teething pains in the past. Learning from ones mistakes. Applying that info towards a better product and service. SImple

Supply is perhaps on the improve in general? I have recently ordered some parts through the Brisbane dealer, some of which had to come on back order from the UK. They are now somewhere between Aus and NZ, not instant but certainly no worse than when i had to get Ducati parts on back order for instance.

Busy stacking the halls with spares possibly, but realistically I suspect that there are owners that have eventually got parts for their 961's, how many owners of 5 year old Ducati's say the same thing? I predict far less.
