So heres the summary. Minding my own business on my way home from work, approx 9:20pm wed night Aug 28th, On McGloughlin /99E traveling southbound, Traffic was moderate, 2-3 cars out front of me, one to my right on my 5 oclock back a bit so we arent in each others blind spots. Just checked my mirrors, nothing noted.
traveling 45-50 with the flow of traffic. not in a hurry. Im in the left lane (2 north and 2 southbound lanes with a cement median-divider) So im looking ahead when the biggest explosion i ever felt hits, Loud and concussive.
I feel the bike float away and im airborne. One thought was the Bike exploded, another was I was overseas again and hit an explosive but couldnt understand why.Everything was black, couldnt see, until I DID see a shower of Sparks,,
then i felt the roadway and knew i was sliding, Tried to tuck and slide but nothing to orientate on.
Came to a stop, Got my helmet open, scrambled to clear the roadway to avoid more cars.
Crowd of people forming, kept asking what happened,? The stupid obvious answers,, "You've been in an accident"
"No shit, what happened?"
So then i see this girl, at first she said something like "you crashed" then pretty quick she started claiming
"He came out of nowhere and crashed into me" I knew where i had been, no way i hit someone else, and the crowd was yelling at her at this point. She tried to keep saying it. A very nice young lady came u[p on my right and said
"I was behind you, I saw everything, this girl ran you over, she hit you"
So then the driver tried to say, "Well lets exchange info" I got the impression she wanted to leave, she went to her car, and i think she tried to leave. I turned to the crowd and told them to "Dont let her leave" I heard multiple people reading off her plate to 911.
So about then a million sirens, and medics appeared, I was immediately strapped to a gurney and neck brace and next thing i know i was at OHSU despite asking to be taken to the VA.
I was told later she was weaving in and out of traffic between 70-80 mph and went into the left lane and never hit the brakes, plowed right into me, pieces of car, bike flew in the air, then i went over her hood, took out her windshield, over the roof, and dislodged her back window somehow, some witnesses thought i was going to cartwheel over the median and into oncoming traffic. Instead i did the 99E slide
Everyone thought i was dead or going to be,
I had been at the Ducati shop MotoCorsa earlier that day and had a radiator, fan, calenders and other stuff in my backpack for my 998 superbike. The ongoing theory is the alloy radiator, bubble wrap and all the other stuff in my pack acted as a spine protector and armour. that stuff was all smashed and road rashed,
There was Oil all over my pants and boots, we thought it was from the bike, but the fuel tank and oil bag are still holding liquids. So the oil didnt come from my bike. Im told her whole front end is caved in, and there was a lot of body parts for her car piled up when we picked up the bike, We had to pull a lot of pieces of plastic and trim out of the bike before moving it.
The bikes frame is bowed, swing arm bent,the rear frame struts vaporized, shocks both bent, fender crumpled into a wad, tanks dented, controls smashed,. but i think i can save the motor. My eye glasses were smashed, all my gear tore up, the helmet lost 4 layers,
I have no apparent broken bones, but extensive road rash,leg, butt, and up my side. My ankles are swollen, my toes on the right hurt and ache, my back is covered with welts, I have difficulty raising my arms, turning my head and i get searing pain between my shoulders, I also periodically start shivering and shaking and cold, then it stops and hot and sweating. only time will tell what the results are.
I will say, they have an amazing ointment, its lidocaine and 3 other things, I scream like a banshee when they smear it on me, but it works like a godsend to stop the pain of the roadrash, Im still picking out gravel.
We found my wallet 10 yards back in the right lane, my bike was 20-30 yards up the road, never found my work keys,
Im pressing charges, evaluating lawyers, and working with the insurance company.
While i sometimes complain, I will say the 3 Portland Police officers involved were awesome and continue to be. I also want to thank the really nice people who helped me at the scene, kept the girl who hit me from leaving, and are co-operating as witnesses and answered all my questions. So far the medical people have been good but thats ongoing.
Im just happy to be alive.
